Picture 11 is the best at showing the devastation of the Bolivar Peninsula just north of Galveston. Well, it used to be the Bolivar Peninsula. It's Bolivar Island now.

I would hire the contractor who built that house!

CNN had an articlelet about it. The owners were wiped out by Rita in 2005. They rebuilt, telling the contractors the new house had to be capable of withstanding a cat 5 hurricane.

Seems it'll stand a 2.

They're going to have a quiet neighborhood until reconstruction begins.

Very quiet since there are no roads, bridges, or ferries to the Bolivar Peninsula right now. The county is trying to get everyone still on the Peninsula to leave. It will be interesting to see if they are ever allowed to rebuild there.

A house to house search shouldn't take long.

A lot of coastal areas here have very strict building codes that were implemented after Hurricane Andrew.

Apparently the one house standing meets the new code.

How long until they get electricity? I'm guessing that it will be a while.

It's standing but from what the paper said today, it is ruined. The inside got water in it.

We've been very fortunate to have power from the beginning. Our across the street neighbor got their power today. (They had an extension cord running to our house).

Our friends Diane and George and their family has been living at our house since Sunday. They still have no power--they live 5 minutes away. Diane's mom has been eating over here. We are getting another family over here tonight.

We need power for our schools. The power at our elementary school is still out. So we have missed 6 days of school, and likely more, I'm guessing.

If it is bad over here, I can't imagine what it is like on the more east side of town that got hit harder.

Those pictures are too typical. On just my street, three houses suffered serious tree damage. Everybody lost trees. A huge tree that fell in our neighbors yard behind our house had to be removed by a large crane.

And what is bad is that our social services were already very taxed from both Katrina and Rita relief. We still have many Katrina survivors in town. The link I put in that post has a place to donate to these local relief agencies that do so much to help so many people.

Just got a message that our schools will be out at least until Tuesday. That only the schools with power will be opened on Tuesday. So far, our school has no power.

Oh, and we survived Ike okay, but almost had to carry the kids out of the house over waist deep flood waters that came from torrential thunderstorms on early Sunday morning. The tree debris clogged the drains. I had to wade in flood waters to the neighbors' house to get him to help my husband clear the storm sewer. We got the highest flood waters we have had since moving here in 2001. Had it rained for another 15 minutes, the water certainly would be in the house.

The radar showed purple on it over our area. Purple is not good.
