Today's Visit with the Dogs

#1 Post by PlacentiaSoccerMom » Wed Sep 17, 2008 6:44 pm

We only had an hour and a half so we played with four dogs, Dumpling and Zap, the dogs that we could adopt and Timmy and Art. We went at an unusual time on an unusual day. Emma got out of school early and wanted to play with the dogs.

I took Dumpling out for a walk She has to be walked in a harness because of her back issues. She was jumping all over the place and really pulled at the leash. When it was time for cuddling, she wasn't really interested. She was sweet, but seemed was so excited by the cuddle room that she didn't want to sit with us.

Then I took Zap for a walk. He also was really tugging at the leash and then he saw himself in the window and started barking at himself. He settled down to cuddle after a few minutes and let us rub his belly. I've noticed that he doesn't appreciate having his ears rubbed.

Zap is more affectionate towards us, but neither one of us really feels a bond with either of the dogs yet.

Emma then wanted to take out Art, her favorite dog. Art is huge, he's taller and larger than Emma. He was so excited to see her that he was rolling around with her in the cuddle room. They ended up lying down and stretching out, with Art putting his arms around Emma and his head up next to her, licking her face, gazing into her eyes, while I rubbed his belly. Emma wants a dog like Art who is cat safe. Art likes everyone, but he likes Emma more than he likes me.

Timmy was Timmy. He is my buddy and likes to snuggle with me. I am really happy at how confident he has become going up the stairs.

We brought Dumpling and Zap each a special toy and gave it to them when we put them back in their cages. Both of the dogs seemed to enjoy the toys, a squeaky dog with ropes as ears. We gave Dumpling a pink toy and Zap a blue toy.

Sounds like Art and Timmy are trying to make real connections with your family. Too bad they don't want to share you with the cats.

Sounds like a great visit.

I am rooting for Art right now.

I would adopt him in a second, but Art is not cat safe. He's been around for a while because he isn't conventionally beautiful.

Is there a plan 'by when' you will add a dog to your family?

There is no timeline.

The dog needs to pick us. Emma and I just don't feel a connection with Dumpling or Zap yet. We are trying to spend time with them to see if either of them bonds with us. The kennel workers say that it takes three times of visiting for a dog to remember people and form an attachment. So far we have taken both of them out twice.

I won't adopt a dog just to have a dog.

Maddie likes the dogs, but I know that whatever dog we get will be Emma's dog. When we visit, she just gets so much joy playing with the dogs. Her favorite time is when she sits in the cuddle room and I bring in a dog for her to play with and they see her waiting for them and they rush up the stairs and give her kisses because they are so happy to see her. She just wants a dog that wants to hang out with her.

That description just makes my heart melt.

Emma will make a four footer very happy and I am sure the four footer will do more than the same for Emma.
