Safe Haven -- Nebraska style.

#1 Post by Appa23 » Tue Sep 16, 2008 11:12 am

This year, the Unicameral passed a Safe Haven Law, making Nebraska the last state (IIRC) to pass a law that would allow parents to leave unwanted babies at a hospital, police station, or fire station. (List may be more exhaustive).

Of course, wanting to show our uniqueness beyond merely have a one-house legilsature, our state senators decided to simply use the term "child" in the law, allowing for the possibility that a parent could leave any child up to the age of 19 at a "safe haven."

This past weekend, the Safe Haven law was used for the first two times.

A 15 year-old was left at a Lincoln hospital, and an 11 year-old was left at a Omaha hospital. The former was left by his guardian aunt, and the latter was left by his adoptive mother (who also was a relative.)

I hope that the boys can recover from this trauma and have a better life. Both were described as having "behavorial issues" that led to the "abandonment".
