Post-wedding blog: General update on BD

#1 Post by gsabc » Tue Sep 16, 2008 7:08 am

The HC stayed a week at an off-base hotel, being misinformed about where they would be for temporary housing. The place was okay and they had a housing allowance that covered the cost, but it was also 40 miles each way to the base. SIL had to "go to work", after all.

Then one of SIL's buddies offered a room at his house on base, with his wife and their 4-month-old daughter. They've been there since that first week waiting for their number to come up on the housing waiting list. It just did this past weekend, and they've been offered a nice apartment. They can move in at the end of the month.

They will be moving with the couple's 10-month-old dog, who has adopted them. Golden Retriever-German Shepherd mix. Name of Murphy. The couple doesn't think they can devote enough attention to the dog now that their child has arrived. Note to them: It's supposed to be child OR dog, not AND.

BD has been having trouble finding a job. She has gotten a bit of a runaround on finding out the status of her applications. However, she has enjoyed her "time off", the first down time she's had since Spring break of 2007. If you can call racing around WDW with another Disney fanatic "down time". She has been writing her thank you's during this period, and helping out with the couple's daughter.

Last week, she had a tour of the base with the other newly arrived brides. It felt awkward. There were the women who had been there a while, or have spouses who are long-timers, in their 30's or more. Then there were the child-brides, 17- and 18-year-olds who were, in BD's words, clueless. Then there's her, in the middle. Fortunately, there is one other newbie near her age, so she's not totally by herself.

During the tour, the base's commander came and spoke, and asked if anyone was having trouble finding a job. BD channeled Hermione Granger with her hand up. She explained the situation. He said that it was unacceptable, and he'd look into it. One of the wives half-jokingly told BD that she should be ready to start work the next day.

It wasn't quite that fast. She did get about a half-dozen names and numbers to call for teaching jobs. We'll see what happens. But when the general talks, people listen.

She will also be teaching a dance class to children on the base come December/January. The current teacher is leaving. BD and another woman will split the duties. They complement each other - BD likes teaching the younger kids (3-10), while the other woman prefers the older ones. Five classes, one afternoon/evening a week. And it pays money. Assisting with dance classes is how she found her vocation in the first place. It's come full circle. Now if she can find a regular teaching position, she'll be all set.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Why? Who makes up the supposes?

Good name, though. I'm glad to hear that your daughter is settling in to her new life. It sounds as if the snags are getting resolved one by one.
