The Milwaukee Brewers have fired their manager, Ed Yost, after losing 7 of their last 10 games.

They are tied with Philadelphia for the NL Wild Card.

WOW!

Milwaukee's brass must be getting really desperate to hold on to a playoff spot....

ESPN's headline said ti was an unprecedented firing, and I'd imagine it is....

I'm not sure it's unprecedented.

IIRC, 1983, the Phillies were in first place by themselves when they fired manager Pat Corrales.

All though the weekend, when the TV cameras went to Yost in the dugout, he looked tighter than a drum.

That was a shocker. I think someone there hit the panic button. I'm still pulling for the Brewers to get in since their two wins over the Padres in the final two games of 2007 gave the Rockies the chance to get that tie-breaker game, but I don't think the firing of Yost helps them.

Oh, I dunno. I've never heard of anyone misusing their bullpen like Yost did on Sunday.

It's the eighth inning of a tie ballgame. Leadoff batter singles. Ned's got one of the best LOOGY's in baseball in Brian Shouse. He brings him in to face Utley and Howard. Utley lays down a sac bunt, and so Howard comes up. This is the mother of all platoon situations. Shouse is death on a stick to lefties, and can't get righties out. Howard is one of the best hitters in the majors against righties, and hits like Paul Bako against lefties. So what does Yost do? He has Shouse walk Howard.

Now Pat Burrell's up. Did I mention Shouse can't get righties out at all? So, naturally, he gets pulled for a right-hander, right? Nope, Shouse stays in, Burrell singles, Victorino hits one out, and the Brewers' wild-card lead is down to one game.

It's too bad we don't get to play Ned all week here. Magic number's down to six, a sweep will do it against the Brewers (though the Stros might be still twitching at the end of it)
