Radio win!

I won a radio contest this morning, and I just had to share. The NYC classic rock station WAXQ-104.3 is having a contest to select a "VP of Rock" (in name only), and to enter you have to submit your favorite classic rock song. (I submitted "Message in a Bottle" by the Police; not so original, perhaps.) Then you have to listen for your name to be announced at 8:15 am, 10 am, 2 pm, or 4 pm weekdays and call within 10 minutes to be eligible.

Well, wouldn't you know it, they called my name at 10 this morning, just as I was driving to work with the radio on. I pulled over, called them back right away (the DJ said, "That was fast!"), and they're going to send me a check for $104. Better still(?), I am now eligible to become the VP of Rock, the sole responsibility of said position apparently being to accept a check of $104,000! That will be awarded by random draw sometime in December.

I love it that I've been picked now, because the contest only started last week and will run through November 21. Getting in so early means that I do not have to run to my radio four times a day for the next 10 weeks, hoping against hope that my name might possibly be read on the air. I just get to sit back and wait for December and hope no one else hears their name and calls in time.

Seriously, I know the odds are still against me. There are 220 possible finalists for the prize, and even if only half call the station in time, that's still 110 people in the December drawing. (I have a feeling it will be more than that, but not nearly 220.) Still, my odds are a lot better than they were before 10 am today. Wish me luck!

Wow! you have a 1 in 220 chance of winning 104,000 dollars? that is probably better chance than if you were on Millionaire. I really hope you win. :)

I'm a Sweepstakes and lotto nut but I've never won more than 30 dollars...I did win my brother 1000 dollars once though. I also got on Millionaire but I can neither confirm nor deny any winnings there.

Actually, Shade, JBG has already been on Millionaire. --Bob

Congrats Jess! We have something in common as I recently won my way into radio station drawing out here on the Island and had good odds, about 1 in 50 each, of either a car, a Hawaii vacation, or trip to LA. I did not win the drawings but considering that I won $1000 last year, I'm about $1050 in the black, less taxes of course.

I was not saying or assuming that she wasn't, I was merely saying that a 1 in 220 chance of winning 100,000 dollars is probably better than the chances of winning the same amount of money if you were a contestant on Millionaire. It is probably impossible to calculate the odds of someone getting to that point in the stack but I'm betting that the odds aren't so good.

15QA keeps statistics on all the contestants on his wwtbam.biz web site. According to that, 87 contestants out of a total of 1,999 have won $100,000 or more on SyndieBAM. (Those are updated stats as of last Friday.)

Now, if you were talking about the odds of getting past the APs at an audition interview... :|

Funny: That's 1 out of 22.

hmm...fine I was wrong...and it also makes me feel bad. The chances of me getting to 100,000 were only 1 in 22. D'oh!

I have a plan to get back on Millionaire, I've donated to Barrack Obama's campaign a few times, I'm hoping he will randomly select a few of us donors to thank for the press when he is elected. Then I will causally ask him to executive order Millionaire to invite me back to the show. It's so crazy of a plan it must be genius :D . Sometimes my intelligence scares me :P
