I think if the last play that got reviewed had even been close, we would have seen the makeup call of all time.

Lest Sprots think I'm ripping the Broncos, let me say that it took some guts to go for 2 points, but maybe Shanahan knew that there would likely be a makeup call in the OT if they went to one.

I still can't figure out that call. OTOH, I have no intention of combing through NFL rules about fumbles and whistles.

Was he the one who blew the whistle? If so, yes.

Still, what a game! I've already seen the last couple plays three times on highlight reels and expect to see it a couple more times tonight. If the score had been 40-3, nobody would have paid it any attention.

Good grief! STILL no score in the Stillers-Browns game. Somebody better get in gear, even if it is his birthday.

Hochuli was the Ref. He blew the whistle and ruled that the play was an incomplete pass.

After review, he realized that it was a fumble (as he acknowledged), but because e had blown his whistle, the play was dead and could not be overturned with regard to possession. The only thing that could be corrected at that point was the spot of the ball.

Hochuli is a great Ref by the way. He just blew this one.

The normal instinct for officials these days is to let the play proceed without blowing the whistle, but there's also the instinct to "protect the quarterback." In this case, you had Cutler and some really big Chargers player going after the ball. By blowing the whistle, he decreases the risk of Cutler getting hurt.

I don't blame Hochuli for it, but it was the wrong call, and it cost San Diego the game.

I dint think that. If we'd come into the second half awake, or some semblance thereof, San Diego woulda never been close, and that call wouldn't have been an issue, and the two points wouldn't have been an issue.

I was listening to DenverRadioDude on the way home, and Cutler said he and Shanahan had discussed it. The amount of time left was in the range they had said they would go for two.

DenverRadioDude also said it was sorta the Bronocos' attempt to end the game the way it should have ended -- if they convert, they should have won. If they miss, San Diego should have won.

Well, Madden just said it was a bad call. That settles it!

You know, when they instituted the 2 point conversion in the NFL, I wondered if any coach would have the guts to go for two after a touchdown in the final seconds when a one point conversion would send the game to overtime. I'm impressed by the call Shanahan made to go for that two point conversion. I can only guess that the entire state of Colorado would have been screaming if the Broncos hadn't made it and lost by one point.

Perhaps Shanahan knew he had been given a gift by the officials and wanted to give the Chargers two chances to stop them. Whatever his thinking was, it was a gutsy call and made for some exciting football...
