Decrapping the house

#1 Post by Spock » Sat Sep 13, 2008 7:09 am

Mrs. S-as she is between jobs is decrapping the house.

There are years of accumulated junk around and for some reason she keeps mentioning my stacks of books. I don't see them as a problem.

Finding stuff in the closets from years ago.

Wasn't there a professional house decrapper here at one time?

Spocky --

Dimmzy is the professional de-crapper.

However, I've gotten plenty of recent experience from getting TLAF's house ready to sell, so I can help you.

Any excuse to come visit the Spocklettes. :D

Between jobs? Is everything OK?

Seriously, on the books, I did part with a bunch, which was very hard. So I feel your pain.

I think Marley would recommend donating them to the local library. In know our library does sell used books as a fund raiser.

I feel better if my books go to someone who wants to read them. Especially if it raises money for the library to buy new books.

Decrap away!

On between jobs-She worked for the same company for 17 years-16 of those it was a Founder run company-Then he sold it too a VC frim out of California-Expectations and time commitments increased dramatically-The accounting dep't moved to Louisville. She got notice in April and got an OK bonus and severance for training in her replacements-She was done July 31.

Personally, I regard it as a blessing-because it was not a good place to work anymore-ie-Family time and quality of life were not imprtant to the company-

She had an interview cycle a few weeks with a great company and it would be an awesome p[ace to work-She did not get it-We think-because she did not dial things down enough-The company is big on teamwork and family and so forth and she was probably too aggressive in the process for the company.

More specifically, to the Friends of the Library, if there is such a group in your town.

Not that any are as good as the one here in Ithaca. Only a month to go before our big Fall Sale! 8)

Whoa-I never said anything about getting rid of books-besides I am not sure they would go to a good home<G>

I just need to organize the piles-

This spring the kids were in the attic picking out books to sell-I was tempted to shut the door to the attic and see how many they could sell while they are locked up there-

At some point in my life-I will be able to get rid of one or two (books, not kids)-but I have not reached that point yet.

Have you see the Fly Lady's site?

http://www.flylady.net/

The whole philosophy is to take baby steps because your house didn't get cluttered in a day, nor will it get cleaned up in a day.

http://www.flylady.net/pages/begin_babysteps.asp

They also have weekly zones to concentrate on, as well as special missions.

Warning, if you sign up for the emails, they bombard you.

My dad won't get rid of his books. Makes my mom crazy. They are stored in shoe boxes by author.

I have an inaccessible closet in the laundry room. It is mostly inaccessible due to blockage from Mt. Laundrymore, so I can scoot a couple of baskets to get into it, and I used it for Easter baskets and Christmas wrap. And books. I ended up with about four boxed of books that had been my mom's. My dad was donating stuff and putting things into storage and let me cull out what I wanted. After three years I went into the closet and pulled out about two boxes for the donation bin, but there are still two more boxes in there. My shelves are full and my kids' shelves are full and I put some in the entertainment center where most people put VHS tapes and I have no more room for more shelves, but I still won't get rid of the books.

I think there are three more boxes of books in the owner's closet of the beach house if my husband didin't get rid of them behind my back. I hope he did, because I wouldn't. Maybe at Thanksgiving I'll bring them to the thrift store down the road...

We need a reality show like Big Brother where people like us and Paul Giamatti have to move into a small condo together and squabble over shelf space and having to walk around the piles of books in the hallways....

Is there even a law against squirrel porn?

And if there is........... why?

Where is the squirrel's attorney to set us straight?
