Walmart women seen as key swing voters on Election Day

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:32 am

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Sept 11, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- As part of an ongoing effort to engage its customers and associates, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. will begin a voter registration campaign with public service announcements (PSAs) on its in-store television network later this month to encourage 136 million weekly customers and 1.4 million U.S. associates to register and vote in the November elections.

The campaign will include two, 15-second PSAs that will encourage viewers to register to vote and cast their ballots in the upcoming election. The PSAs will run in stores through Election Day.

The company will also launch a voter registration portal on its corporate website beginning today, http://www.walmartstores.com/vote, and feature posters with voter registration information at nearly 600 Sam's Club U.S. locations.

"Pollsters have found that our core shoppers, Walmart women, are an influential demographic in the upcoming presidential election," said Leslie Dach, Wal-Mart's executive vice president of corporate affairs and government relations. "Our voter registration campaign is designed to encourage millions of customers and associates to register and cast their vote."

Research shows that in today's economic climate Americans are shopping at Walmart more than ever. More than half of all Americans -- including more than two-thirds of Walmart women -- surveyed by Voter/Consumer Research of Washington, D.C., say they are more likely to shop at Walmart now, compared to six months ago. In addition, the overwhelming majority of this core voting bloc of women (91 percent) are favorable toward Walmart. Also, nearly half of registered voters who are currently undecided on the presidential election say they are more likely to shop at Walmart today than they were six months ago.
