Just finished Brainiac - with some shoutouts

I just finished reading Ken Jennings' Brainiac. It was a lot of fun to read and I would recommend it.

Hermillion got a shout-out in out along with an interview with the person who wrote her million dollar question.

I was also amused to read the following - could he have had someone specific from the bored on his mind when he wrote it?

"Going on a game show started to seem like an attainable goal, something that happened to real people I knew, and not just to perky anonymous homemakers from Placentia or La Jolla or some other California city that only existed for me in game show announcer intros."

---Jay (Exactly how many skidoos were there? If you know the number then you know the number of days until...)

All things are possible. I hear there's a Placentia family that has three or four autographed copies of the book.

Rumors. I don't know if the family's next door neighbor has yet sent out a mass e-mail to say that they are not as perky as they have been portrayed.

Ken played the homemaker's husband in one of his closer games, so it was no accident the mentioning of Placentia.

Perky? Well, first of all, nobody who knows me would ever call me perky. I am talkative in certain situations, but I am not perky.

Anonymous? That's certainly not me.

Homemaker? I hate that word. I am home with my girls, when I am not volunteering, but I still consider myself to be an accountant.

I do live in Placentia.

Maybe he is talking about one of my neighbors. I have some neighbors who are perky.

Hmmm. It is true that a certain non-perky stay-at-home accountant did appear on WWTBAM before Ken appeared on J!, but it's not at all clear to me that he'd remember Placentia from that particular appearance. I suspect the choice of this town name makes it an apocryphical story! 8)

oh

wait

I am from Poughtown, not Placentia.

They discuss the stereotactic biopsy for intrinsic lesions of the medulla through the long-axis of the brainstem?

Does that fall into the category of TMI?

Have you ever read that great, great, great and great novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' - if you did, then you would know that he was able to deduce his moment of conception by knowing the habits of his parents.

I'm waiting until it gets down to something like "How many units was Bruce always lamenting about?" before I get serious about any of these clues.

Fair enough……I’ll give you some more clues.

1. Bruce was a WELL respected member of our community.

2. Bruce was also very WELL spoken. He often offered opinions, and in-depth explanations, on everything from how the sun could shine so brightly through windows to cogent points of law.

3. Bruce did not, in my opinion, suffer fools gladly, and occasionally could offer swift verbal retribution to some other members of the community who probably were not as bright and well educated as Bruce was. A fellow called Ozzie comes to mind. Why, once he even accused Oz of drinking out of toilets!

4. Bruce also felt that he had been gravely wronged by a significant “other” in his life through the efforts of this SO and an individual in the health care field. Bruce never failed to remind us the injustices heaped upon him by this SO and healthcare provider. Yes, he was extremely vocal about this injustice. Often he would even express his dissatisfaction over what had happed in ALL CAPS!

5. Bruce was the loyal sort. He remained with the tyrannical SO for 23 years, I think, until his demise a few months ago. I think I can speak for most of the bored when I say we miss Bruce. Bruce_the_Wonder_Cat.

wintergreen can tell you all about Bruce. He knew Bruce for over 20 years. This Bored just hasn't been the same without our beloved wonder cat.
