It's hard to see on my avatar, but there's a big ol' feral pig in that pig trap there. He used to live (I'm pretty sure he's been dressed and is curing somewhere) in the preserve we walk through every weekend. Jeff called me last Saturday morning at 7:30 since I was sleeping in and said "It's the holy grail! Get down here!"
He's heard the pigs stampede away from him while walking and we've seen bazillions of tracks, but he finally saw one that got trapped in the trap. It charged at him and beat against the fence and scared the crap outta him. I told him to please come home since who knows how strong the pen is.
There's a herd of about 50 hogs in the area, some trenching up an adjacent golf course, so the game warden is trapping away. First time sighting of a big one. He was maybe a couple hundred pounds and probably an adolescent.

The first time I was in Texas on a turkey hunt, the guide "threw in" a feral pig.
Actually, it was more like, "If you see a feral pig, shoot it!"
So SteelersFan carried a rifle, and I carried a shotgun, or vice versa, when we were out hunting that weekend. The only time either of us had a shot at a pig, I would have had to shoot in the direction that SF and the guide were after a turkey. No way.
They're very destructive, and feral doesn't begin to describe how wild they are. I'm glad you and Jeff are safe, and good luck with the rest of the herd, or pod, or whatever they are.

They are a nuisance and it's pretty much open season in Texas. It DOES creep me out as we're walking only because I'm not a world-class tree climber, and I'm constantly gauging which ones I might possibly be able to hug hard enough to boost my happy ass up. We did get an air horn, though.
Ooh! There's also been an alligator sighting and of course we did, really, hear a mountain lion the very first time we walked the trail. Lotsa deer and rabbits and such, too.

Now my avatar shows a bobcat that was photographed strolling around one of the reservoirs not far from our general neighborhood.

You wanna pork chop?
Yes, I think that bobcat does want a pork chop.
Although it might be more than he could handle!

I think you might need an Evil Squirrel or two in your neighborhood.

Ew.
I don't like any of that stuff. My idea of roughing it is the Ritz being booked up.
Pigs should be crispy and next to my omelet.
Or procuitto wrapped asparagus.

I watched the movie, "Song Catcher" not long ago, and in the movie the main character was advised:
Note: This is paraphrased and takes place in the rural Appalachia mountains.
If you hear what sounds like a woman screaming, it is a panther. You need to start running and take off all your clothes as you are running. The panther will stop to attack and shred your clothes. With the panther stopping, you might have a chance of getting away.
I don't know if bobcats would react the same as panthers, but keep this information in the back of your head should you ever need it.

Oh great. That's just great. And I will remember it. That's exactly what it sound like kind of. Highish and shrillish. I hope they're not picky about what store the duds come from.

So I guess it's not in hog heaven?
