GOP scales back TV ad plans

Republicans' Senate campaign arm called off television ads Tuesday that were to air in New Mexico in the run-up to Election Day, an indication that it's leaving the GOP candidate there to fend for himself as the party braces for losses.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee's decision to cancel the New Mexico spots reflects its priorities during a tough year for the GOP, with the party lagging badly in fundraising and resigned to losing seats in the Senate.

This is a bad year for Republicans, who have a dozen or so vulnerable Senate seats to maybe one (LA) for the Democrats. NM and VA are almost sure goners, and the Dems have a good chance in AK, CO, NH, and OR, with possibilities in four or five other states, including Al Franken in MN.

The Republicans are just trying to cut their losses. Ironically, the money being raised by Palin supporters may go to help finance some Senate seats. I've seen figures that the Dems (who now have a 51-49 majority, if you count Lieberman), rated to pick up five to six seats this time out. I think that the combination of Obama and Palin will cost the Dems about two of the Senate seats and five House seats that they might otherwise have gained. At one time, greedy morons like Howard Dean felt Obama was going to have a coattail effect and sweep Dems into power all over the country. He's going to wind up costing the party instead.

A Udall campaign staffer told me that the Reps were going to try to "get one of the Udalls." Looks like they decided on Mark here in CO.
