The Bored Buddy Art Project

You may have noticed over the past three weeks or so that my good friend the squirrel has been posting some artwork he.... er, I did of BB's. Many of the pictures, you may have noticed, date as far back as early this year. You may wonder what the deal is with this... why, what, huh!?!? Have I finally flipped my lid, or is this just something that can conveniently be blamed on Sarah Palin? Well, I figure I at least owe somewhat of an explanation as to what's going on here, and though it will not be on the milestone day I originally planned to reveal this on, today does mark the 3,000th day of my Bored posting streak, so today's as good a day as any to bring my project to light...

The idea for the BB art project came to me during the last week of December last year. I had spent much of the previous week digging through a website dedicated to anthropomorphic/furry art that I had come across by complete accident through a Google image search. I almost immediately became entranced by what I saw, and the part of me that always loved to draw when I was a kid immediately began to kick into gear and demand another chance at filling my free time. The BB picture series idea was what finally got me to get out the paper and pencil and start sketching... and after happily seeing what I could do using my scanner and the Paint program on my computer, a new obsession of mine had begun.

I had literally not drawn so much as a stick figure in almost 10 years, and had never attempted to draw anything digitally before, so the initial going was a bit rough. It also took months to work out the kinks in my style, and even now 9 months later it is still evolving, and this is why there is such a stark contrast between the earlier ones I drew and the more recent pics. But given the reaction that seemed to follow DK's picture when I posted it, a clever concept can easily outshine a sloppy early attempt, so I at least feel somewhat better about just leaving those older drawings as is.

As for the status of this project, I currently have 67 BB drawings in my file. Beginning with Sunflower's 3 weeks ago and ending with Uly's yesterday, I have thus far shown you 15 of them. All but 5 of the 67 were drawn sometime between New Year's and the first week of June, which coincided with all of the ES side projects I began to work on. The original intention I had for unveiling this was to post them all in one large thread on the Friday before the Bored's 9th anniversary this year, which would have been November 21. Given how the project all but died over the summer, that was no longer an option, and after thinking of several other methods of handling it, I eventually just decided to start slowly showing my hand by posting what I had ready to show at apropos times. I will continue to do that as time goes on, while hopefully at the same time kicking this puppy back into gear and drawing more new ones. This may mean fewer if any ES side projects, but I needed to ease up on those anyway.... damn hyperactive squirrel!

My intention in this project is to eventually have a picture for as many BB's past and present as I possibly can do. My goal when I first set out on this was to have at least 100 done by November, which I will obviously not reach now. But if I can bring this to its full potential, the target goal will more likely be somewhere in the 200 picture range. That's a lot of work, and there is no way I'll ever match the pace I was on of 12-15 a month earlier in the year, but as long as I continue to enjoy doing this, there is always hope that I can complete it to my satisfaction.

One last thing I would like to bring up before I turn the floor back over to the Palin-drones. It's an idea that was pitched to me by a certain BB who I allowed to have a sneak peak at my project back in March, and who made sure to remind me of it again when I started posting the pictures the past couple weeks. IF I can bring this project to some sort of satisfactory conclusion in the next year or so, it has been suggested to me that the time and effort I am putting into this series, although enjoyable for me, should not go unrewarded. Thus, it is entirely possible that when I feel my project is complete, and if there seems to be enough interest from those here of owning an odd souvenir of Bored history, I may use one of the self-publishing companies vandal advised me of to get this project in book form and sell to interested BB. It's far from anything I ever imagined doing when I started this, and even now the idea still seems really crazy to me, but if I do manage to complete this to the level I hope, it would almost be criminal NOT to do something like that. It would also be a nice thing to have done in honor of the Bored's 10th anniversary next November.....

But for now, I shall continue to draw and I shall continue to reveal the good, the bad, and the bizarre. Because for now, it's still about the art, and the enjoyment I get from using my overactive imagination and continuing to make you guys wonder what the hell's going on inside that messed up head of mine.....

Brava!

I hope it is like my quilting. It doesn't have to be perfect, or even close, in anyone elses mind. I just enjoy doing it.

And they usually turn out pretty okay anyway.

Keep up the good work as long as you enjoy it!

Mine is behind my monitor screen. I can see it as I type, but someone would have to actually be in my cubicle to see it.

I think I see a Sparkling Christie on the table!

I think I'll just download them illegally like I do with my music. My portrait is already enlarged, matted, framed and hanging on my wall. I'd like to see the artist hanging next to it.

I guess I'll have to view it at home - this site is blocked at work because Websense (our filtering software) includes this in a category called "User-Defined", and all such sites are filtered out.

It's an armadillo.

Hopefully not the same one that was in Bret Michaels' pants....

I'm glad, and pleasantly surprised that you like it so much!

The nice thing about art is that the viewer may interpret it as they wish.

It is a possum.

I'm hoping that you will sneak in the extra pictures of Annie and Evil Squirrel as he helps Annie with her physics homework.

I thought it was an armadillo, even though that seems more like a Texan dish than a Louisianan one.

I would buy the book.

I might even buy the book for others on the bored who wouldn't buy the book.

Everyone who cares about this place should have one.
