. . . what, you thought this post was going to be political?. . .
The new NBA basketball team in Oklahoma City will be called the OKC Thunder.

Speaking of thunder, for the second night in a row I'm hearing loud rumbles and seeing brilliant flashes of "Mostly Clear."

If they can make my shoe thread political, they can make your thread political.

I'm amazed how anything can be made political.
I try to lighten it up where I can, like starting the political carp movement.
Were there other choices for names? I seem to remember a thread a while back but now all I remember is that Thunder was one of the choices. (Duh)

There were quite a few possibilities floating around, but Thunder is the one I liked best.
If I were a politician, I would claim personal responsibility for naming the team. (That was for anybody who was disappointed about this thread's being not-so-political.)

I tried to think about how I could (jokingly) make it political but the only thing that comes to mind is the Thunder from Down Under show in Vegas. Not that I've seen it either (I really haven't)...the ads were just everywhere!
Probably not the image the team had in mind...

Perhaps not -- but I wouldn't mind.

Doesn't the Mighty Thor live in Oklahoma now? He could be a team mascot when he's not fighting comic book villains!

Ten of us picked the Thunder when I posed this question several weeks ago.

I've never liked that name for a team. It sounds good, but what is thunder? Just noise. Maybe loud thunder might set off some car alarms, but in reality, what can it do. What it it? Just an indication of something really dangerous and powerful is nearby, but it is not it. It is just a messenger.
I would have preferred the OKC Greyhounds.

No word about a mascot as far as I can tell although mascots often have very little to do with nicknames. The Phoenix Suns have a gorilla, the Indiana Pacers have a cat, the Denver Nuggets have a mountain lion, the Lakers have..... nothing, etc.
The colors are described as Light Blue (for the state flag), Yellow (for the Sun), and Reddish-Orange (a mix of OU and OSU colors).

I almost forgot. The Golden State Warrior's mascot is already named Thunder.

Is there some reason why it was deemed desirable to call them the Oklahoma City Thunder, and not just the Oklahoma Thunder? The latter seems to reach out to a wider fan base and flows much more naturally off the tongue.

No reason was given. I wondered along the same lines.

Maybe Tulsa wants a team too.
