WWTBAM Bored

Delta states on their EOB form that Customer Service hours are from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

They are supposed to cover $1500 of Maddie's braces. They are only paying half. I called them before I got braces to confirm our benefit and they assured me that they would pay $1500.

So I called early this morning, because I am never around at 5 p.m. to make phone calls. I spend 15 minutes going through menus to talk to the Orthodontics monkeys and guess what, they aren't open until 7:00 a.m.

All is good. They will be paying the rest, they just don't pay their whole portion at once.

By the way, it probably sounds racist, but I don't care right now...Why the hell should I have to press a button to hear the menu in English. English should be the default, the last time I checked, it was the official language.

Glad it worked out. The EOB should have made it clearer so you didn't have to waste your time on the phone.

Last time I checked, language was not a racial characteristic.

Actually that's not true. Although there have been efforts to pass legislation making English the official language of our nation, those efforts have failed. I don't know if there are state laws that mandate this or not.

The U.S.A. doe snot have an official language. I doubt California does.

I think the "To continue in English" is more designed to allow English speakers to avoid having to sit through hearing all the previously given instructions in Spanish (and possibly more languages). IOW, if they didn't give you that option, you would waste more time.

That's a classic Cal typo. I've done that as long as I have been using a typewriter, or computer keyboard.

I used to have another regular one that consistently got me auto-banned on a Christian channel on irc. I would invert the third and fourth letters in "account". The resulting typo would get me banned for posting a naughty word.

Wiki says California is one of 27 States to have adopted Official English, HI has English and Hawaiian, Louisiana has English and French. No National Official English yet.

I get annoyed at the ATM machine in my building at work, which requires you to choose between English or Spanish on the first screen that appears once you've swiped your card. How hard would it be to make the initial screen in English, but include an option to switch to Spanish?

And of all languages to include, why only Spanish? I would think that most people who can read only Spanish could manage to navigate their way through ATM options in English. Monolingual Korean, Chinese, and Japanese speakers would presumably have a lot more difficulty.

I'll admit, it can be tricky to use an ATM in a foreign language, even when you can sort of figure out what the words mean. In Denmark, I spent 15 seconds looking for a key to indicate "OK" before I realized that KLAR ("clear") didn't mean "cancel".

The language selection on the ATM has always irked me, too. In Orange County, our ATMs have options for English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean and Hmong, among others, I'm sure.

How hard would it be for the bank to store my preference? Why allow someone to access my account in a language I don't speak?

My bank card lets me store preferences - including language - of course it doesn't work at all machines - but most of the time it goes right to English.

As for the original post in this thread -- dental insurance *sucks*. I am currently mired in the middle of a bunch of dental procedures that have wrecked my husband's plans to retire by the age of 57. And everyone keeps telling us at every juncture, "Oh, you have such great dental insurance!" Really? Then why does my mouth hurt 24/7 and why are we going into debt to eradicate the pain? If this is an example of "great" dental insurance, then I feel very, very badly for everyone else in our community.

I ditched Delta earlier this year. It was like paying 100 bucks a month to be uninsured.

My ATM was just redesigned, and I used it for the first time yesterday. It took me almost a minute to find where to put the #&*%@ card in! (The slot was ringed with glowing green lights. Even an idiot could have found it. In the dark. From Outer Space. But it had moved, and that threw me off...) And they added sound effects that were really loud. And they bordered the whole shebang in bright red.

It was freaky.

I used to have Delta. It covered nothing, but because it was provided as part of employment benefits, I was supposed to feel better because I didn't have to pay for it.

Then they changed insurers. We got "better" dental insurance. I still don't have to pay for it, and it provides more "coverage." Virtually no dentists in this town will accept it.
