Reverse Timeline - September 3
Today is our first Reverse Timeline. You've got the year, just figure out the event that goes with it. I've even put the years in chronological order for you! Simple, right? Beware, not as easy as it seems. I know, yesterday was tougher and difficulty is supposed to progress during the week, but it's not my fault Beheading Day fell (ha!) on a Tuesday!
Format today should just be a copy the answers from the well and paste it after the year. Much faster to score when I know which year you're putting with the answer instead of just the question number.
"Mothers are the Invention of Necessity"
Or something like that. Ha! Does anybody but me remember the words to "Mother Necessity" from America Rock? Didn't think so.
Match the year with the event from the Invention Well below the bonus question for 4 points each. I know there are sometimes descrepancies as to the exact year of an invention (is it the idea, the patent, the manufacture?) but I think these are spread out enough so the point is probably moot, Jessie.
(Possible 50 points today, including the bonus.)
1. 1843
2. 1855
3. 1861
4. 1898
5. 1919
6. 1937
7. 1956
8. 1968
9. 1974
10. 1988
Bonus (10 points): What was the original name of Liquid Paper?
Invention Well:
Alexander Bain invents the fax machine.
Bettie Nesmith Graham creates what will come to be known as Liquid Paper.
Charles Strite comes up with the pop-up toaster.
Chester F. Carlson invents the photocopier.
Christian Andreas Doppler creates Doppler Radar.
Douglas Engelbart demonstrates the modern computer mouse.
Edwin Prescott patents the roller coaster.
Georges Audemars creates rayon.
Gynecologist Giorgio Fischer develops a successful liposuction procedure.
Linus Yale invents the cylinder lock.

I don't know what you mean on this one. Christian Doppler lived in the 1800s. Radar was not invented until almost WWII. Doppler radar came later. So maybe you mean something else that Doppler did, which was later applied by others to invent Doppler radar.

I still can't figure out this one. There are a jillion websites that say in 1988 Christian Andreas Doppler invented Doppler radar! (Put in 1988 Christian Andreas Doppler.) In fact, the reason I used this one was because I was surprised to read it, as I thought Doppler was a long time ago. I guess instead of checking facts in a couple different places for things I don't know for sure I should have actually looked up Doppler and learned that my assumption that he was a long time ago was correct!
I'll work it out tomorrow after I check out all the answers how to best deal with this in order to make it as fair as possible for everybody. I'm too tired tonight, so I'll leave my scoring the answers so far until the game is closed.
Btw, if anybody can look at some of those pages and figure out what the deal is with 1988, I'd sure appreciate it! I nominate AJ and Confessor. Ha!

I didn't even see Confessor's answer when I wrote this. But I somehow knew that he would be pointing it out as well. Ha!
Btw, I was serious about appreciating it if one of you two guys could check that out and see if you can understand wtf is up. Because you're good at it and I totally suck at trying to search stuff and it's really going to bug me.
I know that misinformation gets spread because people pick up something wrong from one site and put it on another and so on and so on. But some of those sites look pretty legitimate, not just blogs and the like.

Some Doppler Radar info:
Here are some links that relate to doppler radar, mentioning 1988 as the year when a particular model of doppler radar came into use.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/doppl ... _intro.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_radar
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/radar/radarresources.html
So 1988 is a key year in the history of doppler radar, and it was named after Christian Doppler because it incorporates his original Doppler Principle by measuring not just the mass and position of rain, but also the velocity of the particles.

TheConfessor is onto it but it still doesn't make much sense.
The weather radar which became NEXRAD is based on the "1988 Doppler" radars that became the standard around the country. "1988 Doppler" being the type of Doppler Weather Radar introduced in that year.
But how websites came to say that Doppler invented Doppler Radar in that year is hard to understand. Christian Doppler died in 1853. Doppler Radar, in the sense of being able to use knowledge of the Doppler Effect to extract velocity information from radar returns, was used almost from the very beginning of radar in the 1940s. Heck, police radar guns use the Doppler Effect. Those have been around since the 1950s.
