I think my iMac may be dead

The calvinatorettes were using my iMac today and accidentally pulled the power cord out of the back of it. When Mrs. Cal plugged it back in, the computer would not start.

Any chance it's still under warranty?

This sometimes happens with Jeff's laptop. To fix this problem, I usually take out the battery, leave it out for a few minutes, put it back in and then his laptop starts working.

Since I don't have an iMac, I am not sure if this would work for your machine.

No, but you can rest assured that when I buy a new Mac, I will buy the extended Apple Service Plan. They come with a 1 year warranty. The extended plan goes 3 years.

When I had an issue with my PowerBook, I've managed to use the disk recovery measures listed at the Apple website to restore it.

How long ago did you buy it?

If you can, I would try calling the service number anyway and see if they have any suggestions. You can say that you don't remember when you bought the computer, all of that information is on the computer and you can't get it started....

Reposted from my blog:

First, the bad news. My iMac G5 died a few days ago. I took it to the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store today. It didn't take long for the guy to come back with the even worse news. The logic board and the power supply had both gone bad.

More bad news. I didn't purchase the extended Apple Care Plan when I bought the computer in 2005, so the warranty expired over a year ago.

But then, there's good news.

It turns out that the logic board/power supply problem was a known issue with my model, so even though I'm not under Warranty, Apple is still going to replace the parts at no charge. Otherwise, it would have cost me about $800.

Great news, Cal. Did you have your data backed up? Not that it appears that you lost any, but you never know...

I did not have it backed up. The guy at the Genius Bar said there was no reason why I should lose anything, but they did have me initial that I understood there is a risk of lost data and that I would not hold them responsible if it happened.

This is the type of solution I like to see. Can you get the extended warranty for the replacement? I'm glad it worked out for you.

That is a great question, and I intend to ask it when I get my beloved computer back next week.

In all likelihood, the power supply blew up, and took the motherboard/logic board with it. Seen it plenty of times with PCs, to be sure.

They have to do something to take care of their customers.....after all, aren't there only about 30 of you left anyway?

Seriously, that's good news.
