Answers & Points Timeline, Game 1 Monday Sept 1

#1 Post by Here's Fanny! » Mon Sep 01, 2008 7:15 am

The first game out of the chute is pretty straightforward, so I won't give a lot of instructions. Because I know how you all hate my intro paragraphs. If you didn't you'd actually read them, right? Ha! Anyway as the the weeks go on and the games get more complicated, I'll explain wtf is going on for new players and as a reminder for the (ahem!) older players.

For today's game, please just keep the questions in your answer and insert the years in between in bold. When the answers are just numbers that will help me to calculating the correct "close, but no cigar" points for the individual questions. Also make sure you check out hints (freebies) after the bonus question. And don't forget those spoilers!

If you paid attention last month, today's game should be a breeze. Hey, you've already been given all the questions!

Timeline - September 1, 2008

"It Pays to Read the Promos!"

1. Shirley MacLaine gives the performance of her career in Terms of Endearment.

2. Country music artist Merle Haggard is born in Oildale, California

3. James Earl Jones wins a Tony award for The Great White Hope.

4. Fred "Curly" Neal joins the Harlem Globetrotters.

5. Shirley Jones give the world's future teen girls a reason to scream when she gives birth to her first son, Shaun Cassidy.

Bonus (10 points): What is the name of the Merry Promo Man who leaked today's game? (No fair peeking at past board posts!)

Freebie #1 Two of these events occurred in the 1960s.

Freebie #2 Shaun Cassidy was still a teenager when Da Doo Ron Ron hit #1 on the Billboard charts in July of 1977.

Freebie #3 James Earl Jones accepted his Tony award one month before Apollo 10 was launched.

Freebie #4 Merle Haggard was not yet eligble for his AARP movie discount when he went to check out that hot older woman Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment.

Scoring (50 points possible - plus bonus):
Perfect (exact year) = 10 pts
Close (+/- 2 years) = 5 pts
Near (+/- 4 years) = 2 pts
Ballpark (correct decade) = 1 pt

Intro paragraphs are sometimes the best parts of the game... otherwise I wouldn't spend so long on them myself. It's just sometimes the info in them gets retained in the brain for about 3 milliseconds....

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Not a big deal, but just to clarify, does "correct decade" mean +/- 10 years, or just having the correct first three digits in the answer? If it's the latter, it might reward a more distant answer and not a closer answer. E.g., if the correct answer is 1969, then 1960 scores a point, but 1974 does not.

I thought about this afterwards and was going to clarify it in the answer post (I probably still will because a lot of people don't go through and read the responses that are posted after they have answered).

You get whatever tier gives you the most points, but only one tier per question. The "Ballpark" point only figures when an answer isn't close enough to qualify for a higher point value.

Still not a big deal, but you didn't answer the question I was trying to ask. Does the "Ballpark" 1 point apply whenever responses are within +/- 10 years of the correct answer, or only when they are within the same commonly named decade, such as "the sixties" or "the eighties"?

For example, if you asked when humans first walked on the moon (1969), and you got these responses from two different players -- 1960 and 1974, would you reward the 1960 response for being "in the ballpark," but not reward the 1974 response, even though it is actually closer?

So I did. The point is for the 'decade' 60s, 70s, as long as you have the correct century, ha! The reasoning on this is not what is closest to the actual date but more of a 'hey, dude, at least you knew it was the 60s!' point.
