Though far below the requests of others who have sick relatives or friends, or need other support on this bored, please keep me in mind over the next hour or so while an unkind in-law visits our home. I'll need to keep my tongue firmly chomped between my teeth, and a smile on my face. Though if anything is said that is unkind regarding Sam (good chance this will happen), please send good vibes that I'll know the right thing to say.

:( for the situation and :) for this group

I feel your pain. My inlaws were here last weekend and my tongue is still swollen from biting it. My mother in law is unkind to say the least.

Hang in there, Cindy. You can do the right thing (and if the relative is "wrong" enough, I trust "the right thing" can cover a pretty wide range.)

Keep your cool and if anything is tried I will banish them to the dungeon

I have the utmost faith that you will do the right thing.

Good luck! I hope it's a short visit.

I hope you MIL doesn't say anything about the way you are raising those beautiful girls!

I am thinking of PSM's experiences. Although I also realize that it is her mother and NOT MIL.

I have one of those. I call her my monster-in-law.

I have issues with both of them.

My monster-on-law called me yesteday and immediately started screaming at me because I didn't call her back about going out to breakfast for Maddie's birthday.

I told her that I didn't know anything about it, but it was still my fault.

(Jeff was supposed to tell me and since he wasn't interested in going, he just didn't say anything to me about it.)

I told her that I have been pre-occupied because I have been trying to help my friend with breast cancer, so Jeff probably forgot to tell me. She asked the particulars, and I told her a little bit about what was going on. She then told me that I should prepare myself because my friend was probably going to die.

I told her that she doesn't know my friend or our circle of friends and that my friend wasn't going to die from this.

I know that you want good vibes so that you will know the right thing to say, but if you have a nasty in-law, I am guessing that nothing you saw will ever be right.

PSM --

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought your aggravation came from your mother.

If not, my apologies.

Oh, brother.

I just read the above post about the phone call.

Charming.

My sympathies.

This one is the son of the MIL aka the BIL He's a chip off the old block and has learned all the tricks of the trade, and then some, from his Mom. He is part of the group that we've had to distance ourselves from since moving here.

Things went quite well. I stayed out of the way. One minor thing happened, but I think I did the right thing. :)

Thank you for the well wishes. I really had an awful case of the nerves when I originally posted this message.

Ugh! My sympathies too.

You hit the nail on the head PSM with the 'nothing you can say' comment. I think everything I say is just fuel for them. LOL

You just have to realize that it's not you, it's them. Some people are never happy, you can't make them happy and you shouldn't try to make them happy. You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family.

I am not among the most politic of people (no, really? Ha!) and, while that is sometimes an advantage, it certainly is not in these cases.

I admire you for being able to maintain your grace!
