The Majorcas
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

ANSWERS

1. Barcelona is the birthplace of what former International Olympic Committee president (and current Merry Man)?

Juan Antonio Samaranch. "Juan Scaramanga" was a dilemma; I knew that wintergreen knew who he was talking about and I've been generous with spelling in the past, but when the lead is at stake, I'm afraid that the different number of syllables and different pronunciation means I can't award him credit for this one.

2. The Mall of America became the largest enclosed shopping mall in the United States, when it opened in 1992 in a suburb of what city?

It's in Bloomington, outside Minneapolis-St. Paul. Mentioning any of these was good for credit.

3. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. What author wrote the book, Homage to Catalonia, describing his experiences in the Spanish Civil War?

George Orwell. I think this has become the most interesting Q&A of the month! When I was writing this QoD, the title of this book came to mind. I, too, thought that was one of Hemingway's, until I checked my facts online. Then Hemingway turns out to be the nearly unanimous choice of the Bored! GMTA? :P If the WWTBAM question writers are lurking, they should borrow this question as an upper tier WWOQ!

Kudos to Fanny and BDM, who were the only two to get this question right!

BTW, I presume we were all thinking of Hemingway, because of For Whom the Bell Tolls, which he wrote after going to Spain as a reporter. He wasn't an active combatant, like Orwell, though.

4. Off the coast of Catalonia, Majorca is the largest island in what Mediterranean island group?

Balearic Islands.
