Wayman just had part of his leg amputated, in an effort to become free of cancer. I think he once attended the school where hermillion teaches. He sounds optimistic about the future, since he doesn't need his leg to play his music.

I didn't meet Wayman until he was in college at OU in Norman, OK. I was working in the exec office of a local bank and pregnant with Darling Daughter, and Wayman was one of our customers. Wayman used to come in to visit with bigwigs for lunch, etc. A charming, good-natured, ball-of-fire. We would joke about naming the baby after him if I had a boy, but that since dad was 5'9" and the world's whitest white man . . . there wasn't too much chance of confusing future NBA scouts.

Fast forward to Tulsa 1999. I began teaching at Carver Middle School, and in the ensuing years have taught Wayman's daughter Tiffany, two nieces and two nephews. Wayman's late father was a well-respected Tulsa preacher, and this is a very tight-knit, supportive family with a strong faith. The original diagnosis was made two years ago, and they've all pulled together. Wayman has said he wants to get back out playing music ASAP, and I have no doubt that's exactly what he'll do.


Note to SC: Brian, the keyboard player you met at Leon's concert, has worked with Wayman on many arrangements for his CDs over the years. Everybody knows everybody!
