Tropical Storm Gustav became a category 1 hurricane this morning and has made landfall on Haiti this afternoon. The system will be hitting Cuba over the next couple of days and then heading into the Gulf of Mexico.

Some projections have Gustav building to a Category 4 or 5 hurricane while in the Gulf.

A week from now it will likely be headed for the mainland anywhere from Mexico to western Florida. The current forecast has the eye right in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.

Hold onto your hats after that.

Let's hope this one just keeps on moving and doesn't hit the states anywhere.

That's exactly what we were talking about here at work this afternoon. We are a satellite library of the HQ library in New Orleans and had lots of friends/co-workers affected by Katrina.

Odds are this won't be anything like that but hurricanes in August will always make me remember that one.

I hope ole Gustav finds his way to a very unpopulated beach to make his landfall. Heck, it is still raining around here off of Fay.

Sort of reminds me of the intro to Rita as well. I guess we'll know come the weekend, more or less.

It literally just cleared out from Fay here this morning. Bummer, too cuz the girls really wanted to go swim this weekend. It literally rained the entire weekend and all of Monday.

Gustav looks kinda scary. This weekend we'll know better about what he's gonna do.

BTW, Gustav is my dad's middle name. Just a little bit of trivia.

Gustav is back down to a Tropical Storm after passing over the mountains of Haiti last night. Still with 60 mph winds so he should build right back to hurricane status today.

The computer models now mostly have Gustav hitting the U.S. coast somewhere between Panama City, FL and New Orleans on Monday or Tuesday.

We are OK on the treading water thing. I pay the price for flood safety every night when I climb straight up my 45 degree driveway to get up on top of our hill. What concerns me more is that I live on a 1,500 acre lake and it is filled to the brim. (actually, when it gets this high, it gets closer to 1,600 acres as water backs up the creek) There was about 6-8 inches of water flowing across the emergency spillway when I drove thru it on the way to school this morning. If that goes up another 6-8 inches, they will close the road that goes across the dam and I will have to go in the back way and cross the back bridge. Driving around the entire lake adds over 7 miles to my drive.

When I got up this morning the Gustav tracks had mostly switched from a Louisiana landfall to ones aimed right at Houston.

But now they are mostly aiming back at Louisiana. My co-workers in New Orleans say that the City and State are planning for a mandatory evacuation starting on Saturday or Sunday if Gustav stays on this track.

We'll probably get a better idea once Gustav clears Cuba sometime on Saturday.

Gustav is currently a Tropical Storm and somewhere near Jamaica.

Yes, but that's also causing tornadoes today.

Speaking of a Hurricane behind.

Tropical Storm Hannah has formed in the Atlantic and will probably head toward the Bahamas or Florida next week as a Cat 1 or 2 Hurricane.

Gustav is undecided. Right now there are 6 computer models of Gustav's future track. Three of them are headed toward New Orleans/MS and three are headed toward Texas.

This is going to be interesting for the disaster preparedness people. New Orleans says they are going to have mandatory evacuations well ahead of a possible landfall but there is a good chance we won't know until Sunday or Monday which landfall is likely. Do they force everyone to evacuate just in case?

I would not want to be the person making that decision.

I would not want to be the person making that decision.

In light of what happened after Katrina you just might have to force everyone to evacuate. If you don't then you're stuck with hundreds of thousands of people trying to get out at the last minute.

No matter how annoying it is always better to be safe than sorry.

During Katrina half of all of the people that died were over 75. Stubborn old people that wouldn't leave. The city needs really needs to focus on getting these people out of the city.

My weather geek person who lets me know why I need to keep my excess flood insurance in NC is looking at the wave that just came off the Cape Verde Islands. Things could get interesting on the East Coast in 10 days or so...
