A fun and interesting website

Have you ever stopped and wondered about how many of the over 3,000 counties and parishes in the United States that you've been in or through during your lifetime?

Well, there is a website that I discovered earlier this month that allows you to record and map out all of those counties:

http://www.mob-rule.com/counties/

According to my scorecard, I have been in 367 out of 3,141 counties total for a score of 11.7%. I've lived in 5 counties, done something special in 86 counties, merely slept in 7 counties, and merely driven through 269 counties. Flying over counties do not count. You must physically be in the county to count it.

My map looks like this:

http://www.mob-rule.com/counties/user-g ... reball.gif

Don't let Bob Juch get ahold of this. He might break it.

Have you actually been drawing lines on a map for every place you've ever driven through? I doubt if I could recall a complete list from memory!

He's younger than you, so he has less to remember. I don't think I could ever remember all my travels across the US. I took a trip of about 6,000 miles across the western US in 1988.

I actually did mark my route on a map during my Great Almost-Coast-to-Coast Road Trip in '95. I suppose, if we're just trying to check off counties, I could manage a fairly complete list, while missing the occasional one here or there.

Hmm, the lists the 19 least visited counties and I have been in all of them. :D

Most of the map was put together from my own memory. For other places, I had to ask my father, mother, and stepfather to recall all of the places that I have been that I've forgotten about. Particularly, I had to ask my father the route that we drove when we left Los Angeles when I was only 2 years old.

Now that I've discovered this site, I'm much more alert when it comes to places that I've never been before.

I find it interesting that in 26 years of living in Kentucky, I have never been in Harrison Co. (which has the city of Cynthiana), which is only two counties east of here. I have an entire week off work next month and I've planned to drive up to Cincinnati and spend a day there... so I think I'll take the long way up there by driving through Harrison, Bracken, and Pendleton Counties.

My mother and I have already started saving money for vacation next year. She wants to drive to Arizona. My uncle and his wife live in Surprise (just outside of Phoenix). I haven't seen them in 21 years, back when they lived in Racine, Wisconsin.

So next May, mom, the NellyLunaticTwins, and I will turn a lot of these counties yellow and red.

Always had a thing about "seeing where I've been" but this could take awhile!

Heck, I can go through 159 counties and never leave Georgia. And I probably have come close to driving through most of them. Having driven from California to Florida and all the way up to Maine and back at one time or another, not to mention most of the midwest and the plains at one time or another as well it would likely take me a while to do this. Have spent reasonably significant time in 47 states so far, 48 if you count a "fly by" stop in Minneapolis, with only Vermont and North Dakota somehow being denied the pleasure of my charms.

And then I would have to start on countries. Have always intended to sit down a create a list of countries I have visited so far but have never quite gotten around to it. Get to add at least 2 (4 if you count plane stops) and possibly 5 or 6 more this fall.

Yep, that would take awhile to do. For another time perhaps.

Wow, you've done "something special" in 86 different counties? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

I notice that the only county you've visited in Texas is Travis, where I live. And you did "something special" there. Just to be perfectly clear, I have never met you.

I can confirm to the Bored that I have never met Ed.

I once flew down to Austin for business-related purposes six years ago on Screaming Baby Airlines. The twins (who were only six months old at the time) and my wife accompanied me on this trip at my insistence that I did not want to be away from them for a whole week. (It was kinda funny when I said it then, but now it's poignant.)

I live in Travis county as well - and there are 10 kids in my household - I always told people I have 10 kids - is there something I should know that would make my statement not 100% true?

---Jay (William B Travis was born in 1809 - the same year that both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born (they share the same birthdate, Feb 12th) Darwin had 10 children (where did I hear that number before) and his daughter Henrietta Emma “Etty” was born when Charles was this old - if you know how old he was then you will know the number of days until my scheduled air date)

This IS an interesting site. Once I get my userid/password accepted, I'll spend some time with it. But I do wish MobRule had

a) put a label in for major cities
and
b) put labels on the roads. There are too many to try to figure out!

It takes a couple of days for the guy to set up the account.

I guess that is where they expect you to consult an atlas or Mapquest or even Wikipedia. I know I've had to consult Mapquest many times to see whether or not a particular highway or interstate ran through the corner of a particular county.

I got my ID and started working on the maps.

I figure it's a long term project to get all my travels filled in.

Oh-gee-Thanks.

I have long been planning on cataloguing my counties through GIS- I am thinking I have been to about half of them. I tend to take side roads which definetely increases county numbers-in addition to interstate travel.

Now-I will have to actually waste the time to do it.

Hey, I clicked on a bunch of counties this afternoon but they don't show up on my summary map.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

No, no, no... those are my twin sons.
