WWTBAM Bored

10 years ago I turned 40. My wife wanted to know what I wanted to do. I wanted to go to Key West. So we booked the flights and hotel. We didn't invite him, but Georges came anyway. The day before we were suppose to leave they closed A1A. So instead, we went to Aspen.

This Saturday I turn 50. Again, I wanted to go to Key West. But, I didn't fall for it. I also looked into a 4-day cruise out of Galvestaon to Cozumel, but due to my recent medical escapades I decided against it. Good thing. It looks like Gustav wants to celebrate the Big One with me in the Carribean. Sorry to disappoint him.

We will go to Austin or Dallas for the weekend. Not sure yet which. Looks like I could celebrate with Delbert McClinton in Ft. Worth, or Collin Hay in Austin (though I'm having trouble getting hold of the theatre for tickets).

It is driving my wife nuts that she doesn't know where she'll be.

I was moaning about how all my kids are winter babies and I can't have their birthday parties by the pool, but after reading about Kay's little inadvertent indoor shindig for a pack of 3-year-olds, I'll just keep going to those expensive places where college kids do all the work for you. And you should stick to indoor events for major milestones!

That's what happens with a birthday in the heart of hurricane season. You need to think about trips to less southerly areas. An Alaskan cruise, perhaps?

It isn't any better for us summer kids. Then again, our mom spent what money she had on concert tickets for us, so she couldn't afford pool parties. We had to go swim in the chemical plant's retention pond....

At least we got to eat all our brother's cake since he never wanted any...

I made delicious, still soft and moist brownies on Sunday. There might be one left--I'll let it get good and crunchy before I mail it to you! Burnt, stale--what's the difference.....?

In addition, I think we might the youngest group that has a clear memory of where we were when we heard the JFK was shot.

If you want to go to Key West you should look into moving your birthday to January or February!

Right you are! That's the earliest world event I have a memory of. I don't have any personal recollections from the Cuban Missile Crisis, the year before.

It's Murphy's law or something. During last year's worst drought in 30 years, my daughter's July 1 wedding scheduled
poolside was greeted by an inch of rain. Or maybe it's
just my normal bad luck.

As a youthful '59er I can't say with certainty that I remember the JFK assassination clearly. However I do remember clearly how the coverage and funeral disrupted the weekend cartoon viewing and how annoyed I was. 4 year olds are like that I suppose.

Still kind of annoys me...

Kindergarten, Acmetonia (PA) Primary School. Mrs. Andorff's afternoon class. It was a Friday afternoon -- which was always Show & Tell. A kid named Randy Dalbow brought his new transistor radio for his Show & Tell item. BTW -- Randy was sorta of our Class-Clown-ADD-Hyperactive-type boy, and the only member of our class to flunk First Grade the following year. And, he's now Doctor Randall Dalbow So, maybe the repeating of First Grade helped him get thru med school

Well, we were listening to Randy's transistor radio when the news hit. Only that President Kennedy had been shot & gone to the hospital, no word yet on his condition. I don't remember an early dismissal, but it's possible -- probably regular time though. My Mom was crying & told me that the president was dead. I asked her where he was shot & she told me the bullet hit his head. I remember asking why they couldn't do an operation & take out the bullet -- wouldn't he be OK then? At age 5, I guess you don't have a lot of appreciation for the damage a high-powered rifle bullet can do to the human head!

I sat on my Dad's lap pretty much all weekend watching funeral activities (& watching Oswald get shot -- also shocking!) For whatever reason, I understood that this was important & solemn & "real" & didn't really care about missing cartoons. I liked watching the horses & hearing the sad military music, and felt so sad for Jackie & Caroline (who was a little older than me) & John-John (who was the same age as my sister Eileen.)

As for the Cuban Missile Crisis -- I don't have as much memory of that (having been only 4 at the time!) I remember my Dad wanting to listen to the "boring old news" one day & explaining that "America might be going to war" -- but whether that was Cuba or some sort of escalation in Vietnam, I couldn't begin to tell you. I think it was a Sunday because Dad wasn't at work, cartoons were on until "the boring old news" interrupted them, & we were eating brunch & (I think) going to Church! So, probably not Cuba, since October 22, 1962, was a Monday not a Sunday.

Eh, but what do I know -- I was four!
