QoD Weekend August 23 -- 1968: What a Year!

As I posted last weekend, I turn 40 tomorrow, as does my wonder twin Calvinator. So instead of moping over the loss of my 30s (I'll do that later!), I thought it'd be appropriate to mark the very eventful year of my birth: 1968. It seems like every time I hit a milestone year of life -- 25, 30, whatever -- all the magazines have to come out with commemorative issues and such. Much as I'd like to think it was for my benefit , of course it's really because a hell of a lot of important stuff happened in 1968. So here is my own commemorative QoD for what Newsweek called "The Year That Made Us Who We Are." (In Cal's and my case, that's quite literally true!)

Well, it looks like I found some middle ground in terms of difficulty this week. Just one more weekend to go (and that weekend begins on Friday and ends Sunday night, so be ready for that).

He had help from altitude and the maximum allowable headwind, but no one else jumped anywhere near that far that day.

Because of an idiotic brain fart in which I initially wrote "high jump" instead of "long jump," I will accept the first three answers as correct, even though "Secretariat" is not just the wrong answer but the wrong species.

My mom applied to their English graduate program in 1962, and their rejection letter said they already had met their quota of three women -- out of 100 available places.

After the switch tothe little Swiss girl, the Oakland Raiders came from behind to score two last-minute touchdowns to beat the New York Jets. Actually, NBC execs did change their minds about allowing the game to be shown in its entirety, but they made their decision too late to reach individual stations. From then on, the NFL insisted games be covered in their entirety.

The document was and is extremely controversial, but the Church has not budged one inch on allowing artificial contraception. They do, however, allow "natural" contraception, better known as the "rhythm method," which may or may not work for everyone.

8. What nation captured the USS Pueblo in early 1968 and later displayed it as a tourist attraction? -- North Korea. (I'm sorry, but I don't think I can accept just "Korea.") The North Koreans tortured the sailors, including Commander Lloyd Bucher, who agreed to sign a "confession" after they threatened to execute the whole crew. However, they didn't catch Bucher's subversive pun: "We paean ["pee on"] the North Korean state. We paean their great leader Kim Il Sung."
