I went to see the Oakland A's play the Texas Rangers at Arlington Stadium. During the game, Nolan Ryan struck out Rickey Henderson to notch the 5000th K of his career. He was the first (and still only) pitcher to ever reach that level. The A's won the game though, as I recall, by a score of 2-0.

And I paid a whopping four buck for my game ticket...

My wife (though not at the time) and I were there also. I paid more for the ticket as we got the best seats we could, second level behind home plate about 10 seats to third. A buddy and I scheduled out the pitching rotation about 6 weeks ahead and correctly figured out the game he would do it. We wished we had bought some $4 tickets as I recall the bleacher seats were going as high as $75 that night.

We still have our 'certificates' they handed out with out ticket stubbs attached......somewhere.

Yes, I still have my certificate somewhere as well (I also have a certificate from Nolan's 7th no-hitter in 1991). I think I bought my ticket to the 5000th strikeout game a couple of weeks ahead of time, just hoping that my calculations of the pitching rotation were right (and that manager Bobby Valentine wouldn't juggle starters). I was in section AA, which was right on the edge of the huge outfield bleacher, down the left field line. We were actually well into foul territory. I think a seat at the new ballpark in roughly the same spot would cost about 25 dollars today...

Now that you mention it, we may have done our rotation analysis only 2-3 weeks ahead as well. We had Nolan coming up on an away game in Minnesota (I think). Anyway, we knew they wouldn't pitch him on the road that close, and they didn't. They gave him the extra day of rest for the next home game.

Ryan's previous start before the milestone game was on August 16th in Seattle. While he pitched with an extra day's rest, it was because the Rangers had an off day on the 21st...

I remember being nervous watching that game in Seattle on television. Nolan needed 13 strikeouts to get to 5000 going into that game, and I was really hoping I would see it in person during his next start. He only got 8, leaving him 5 short. Interestingly, he did strike out 13 in that game against the A's (the 5000th came in the 5th inning, so Nolan really had the strike outs working in the latter innings of that game). I'm glad he waited a start before posting that 13 strikeout performance...
