Goodbye, professor. Farewell, colonel.

Toy maker Hasbro Inc. has updated its classic Clue game for today's tabloid culture to include younger characters, more weapons, and new rooms, including a spa and guest house.

The six characters' last names remain the same, but their first names and bios have been updated. For example, Miss Scarlet is now Kasandra Scarlet, a famous actress often featured in tabloids. And Mr. Green is now Jacob Green, an African-American "with all the ins."

Colonel Mustard is now Jack Mustard, a former football player. The professor? Now Victor Plum, a billionaire video game designer.

Each character — rounded out by Eleanor Peacock and Diane White — also now has a special power that could help players discover clues more quickly. New “intrigue” and “clock” cards add clues and can eliminate players in the latest version of the game.

In my younger days when we used to play a lot, we re-named them anyway. We had ColonelMuckMuck, ProfPlump, MsHarlot, Murgrinn, MzzzzzzzzzzzPeacock, Dear-Kindly-Sweet-OoooooldMizWhaat-Who-Would-Never-Hurt-A-Fly.

You might have been done in by the Wench in the Hallbroom. Or the Revelver in the Conversatory. Or the Rip in the DingingHall.

It will be available nationwide beginning in the fall, for about $15.99.

I think I gave about $22 for the first one I ever bought. Worth every penny.

Well, actually, they're the suspects, not the detectives. I have no idea what the special powers might be -- Ed's probably right.

Demographically undesirable in the current climate, yes.

We bought it and loved it when we were 20-something despite MuckMuck and White's age and Plump's stuffiness. There's a treatise here somewhere, but I won't be the one to write it.

This just doesn't seem right, somehow. I know time is fleeting, youth marches on, blah de blah. But still.....

I think our family has had every version of Clue known to man, including the one with the VCR tape that played various scenarios, the computer version and the one with the electronic, interactive board.

But none of them were quite the same as the original, low tech, bunch of cards and an envelope version. Some things are just perfect as is, and you shouldn't mess with them.

This is sad. The original game was supposed to resemble an old-fashioned murder mystery, but I guess no one cares about that anymore. Now it's going to be "the skateboarder in the Pilates room with the AK-47."

Just looking at the current updated box makes me kinda sad, let alone this travesty Sprots describes, because Clue has a special place in my heart, and not just because I happen to think the movie is the funniest thing ever. It was the last of the 10 or so board games at my grandparents house 20 years ago that me and my sisters got bored enough to bring down and play..... but when we did, it was so much fun that, being the ever creative brother I was, I came up with a homemade version of the game so we could play anytime. Of course, I changed the characters to Sgt. Pepper, Dr. Pepper, Mr. Pibb, Philip Screwdriver, Angel Soft, and Mr. Coffee, and over time I added more, but those characters eventually morphed into a collection of stories, comics, drawings (you name it) that occupied a lot of my time in the late 80's and early 90's, a lot of which is still colecting dust in binders and notebooks in my room. Those who have read the articles I have posted the last 5 years over in the BBBL, you have an idea how I have a knack for taking bits and pieces and making bizarre continuing stories out of them.....

And on that note, that is where the mysterious Loco Rovo came from... spawned from a world I created that began with a homemade Clue board....
