Well, I can guess who the corporate lackey suck-up is going to be if there's a new season of The Apprentice.

While I'm pleased for Ed that he won't be turned into the street, the entire situation lost most of my sympathy when it was revealed that his wife had run up a $750,000 American Express bill (not counting charges on other credit cards) during the period when the mortgage wasn't being paid. So, unless the wife gets spending under control, additional crises will appear in the future.

Similarly, I cannot cry for the family that faces foreclosure after being given a $450,000 home on Extreme Home Makeover, taking out a mortgage on the house, and blowing the money. (I will cry for the kids, but not the irresponsible parents.)

I had caught only part of this story when it was first out. I thought the mortgage money went to start a business that failed. Unless it was a stupid business idea or they didn't know what they were doing and should never have tried starting a business in the first place, that's not "blowing the money" to me. But then, I could be wrong about what happened and am not remembering the story correctly.

I don't know the details, so perhaps I'm being too harsh.

Does ABC and EMHE do anything to help these families out with the income taxes that'd be due on a $450,000 home?

According to a different story, Beazer, a local company, gave them a total of $250,000 for "home maintenance" and a scholarship fund for their kids.

This news story -- http://www.wsbtv.com/news/16980412/detail.html -- offers a little more information:

"Lake City mayor Willie Oswalt was among the 1,800 volunteers helping Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build the Harper’s new home 3 ½ years ago. Beazer Homes of Atlanta was the main sponsor. The mayor said he is baffled.

"'Beazer gave them $100,000 cash, paid their mortgage off and they still can't make it,' said Oswalt.

"Harper told Channel 2 they invested the loan proceeds in a construction business and the business hasn’t been good. She didn’t say how much of the money is left.

"'What’s going to happen is instead of keep paying my mortgage, I’m going to take my money and not pay my mortgage because I’m being harassed,' said Harper."

Cheer up, Ed. Incidentally, it's better then being terrorized by Martin Sheen on a subway and having to rely on Beau Bridges to save your butt!
