QoD - August 15, 2008

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Fri Aug 15, 2008 6:03 am

2 points per correct answer, 10 points if you get all four correct. Answer with a Spoiler tag in one post in this thread before noon EDT on Monday, August 18.

No outside sources allowed. Just take your best guess.

A note from your QoD Meister/Thematic tour director: As I said previously, we don't have time to retrace our steps through previous tour stops. So, let's jump four whole Olympiads ahead from yesterday's QoD, to Helsinki!

1. Finnish belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of languages. Name one of the other two modern European languages belonging to this group.

2. The 1952 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to what Alsatian physician for his philosophy of "reverence for life", particularly for his work with a hospital that bears his name in Lambaréné, Gabon (formerly French Equatorial Africa)?

3. An arm of the Baltic Sea, what gulf lies between the western coast of Finland and the eastern coast of Sweden?

4. What Finnish classical composer is know for writing the symphonic poem Finlandia, as well as such works as the Karelia Suite, The Swan of Tuonela, and seven symphonies?

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Hungarian. One of those oddities you come across in the trivial world that don't seem to go together but that tends to stick in the darker recesses of the trivial mind...

2. The 1952 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to what Alsatian physician for his philosophy of "reverence for life", particularly for his work with a hospital that bears his name in Lambaréné, Gabon (formerly French Equatorial Africa)?
When I hear "Alsatian physician" it usually brings only one name to mind, Albert Schweitzer.

3. An arm of the Baltic Sea, what gulf lies between the western coast of Finland and the eastern coast of Sweden?
Gulf of Bothnia? I know it is up there somewhere and I think the Gulf of Finland is the southern arm.

4. What Finnish classical composer is know for writing the symphonic poem Finlandia, as well as such works as the Karelia Suite, The Swan of Tuonela, and seven symphonies?
Sibelius. Is there more than one well known Finnish composer???

Speaking of counting, are you going to run into trouble with the wording of your question? Namely that there are more than two other members of the Finno-Ugric family currently spoken in Europe. Karelian (spoken in parts of Russia) is definitely a member, and Sami ("Lapp") may or may not be a member--Wikipedia's Sami article implies that there is some disagreement among linguists, but the Finno-Ugric article lists it in its chart.

Yeah, spending a little time as a QoD Meister gives you on-the-job training in how to write solid questions. My intent was more like, "Name one of the two Modern European languages who names are identical (in adjective form) to the names of the countries for which they are official languages."

But I think it's easier to leave out the fine print and just hand out points for answers I didn't anticipate! ;)
