So you've got some old stuff to clear up at work. Old, & not that valuable to the people expecting their money back, but, hey, money back is money back. Other stuff take precedence. Stuff worth a lot more money. Stuff with looming deadlines. Stuff people dumped on your head & want the next day. Whatever.

So a week later, after putting out fire after fire, getting people massive sums of money credited back they otherwise would not have gotten (about 50% of companies do not credit schools unless the school asks for it, they say because school bookkeeping is so horrid that the freely-given credit often gets taken twice, etc, etc), you're told "that old stuff is still there & you're going on report for it".

What is the difference between triaging mail & good old-fashioned sorting, or another term I say veers in the misused "triage" direction yet does communicate what it means, "prioritizing" mail?

Answer (you knew there would be one): The triagers are in a much higher pay grade. Then, down a few levels, come the prioritizers, I suppose. Then the sorters.

To me, there is nothing about mail that is

(a) comatose or rapidly going down the drain or

(b) bleeding profusely but still conscious or

(c) not at either stage, but gonna get to comatose/drain if its not eventually seen to.

I know "triage" really only means "3". And was probably coined in the 1st place because sorting, or even prioritizing medical conditions sounded so crude.

But now that triage has got a widely-accepted medical meaning, whatever does mail have that would rise it to the "very sick people" level?

"Triage" is French for "sort"' it has nothing to do with three despite what looks like a prefix.

I can recommend forgiving people for their shortcomings, as they tend to have a lot of them. Especially the bosses who Don't Get It.

Forgiveness makes it go better. It doesn't always change their behaviors, but it makes our perception of them easier.
