As I stated the other day, I planned to go to Buffalo Wild Wings in Middletown on Saturday to eat and play NTN... and that was exactly what I did.

I got there just before 7:30 PM, in time for the primetime games.

7:30 PM: Odd Couples. Eight couples, four statements with each couple. Decide if the statements apply to one, the other, both, or neither. My score was #1 in the restaurant and high enough to place #13 nationally.

7:45 PM: True, Half-True, or a Total Lie. 12 statements are given. Decide if each statement is completely true, half true, or a total lie. I missed on just two, giving me the top score in the restaurant once again and also #7 nationally.

8 PM: Jukebox. All music trivia. My score is the fourth best of the past year at BWW Middletown.

8:30 PM: Tuned In. All TV trivia. My score is third best of the past year at BWW Middletown.

9 PM: Playback. An hour of music trivia with a final round where you can bet up to half of your points. Going into that final question, I was in second place by about 3,500 points. I had to bet the maximum allowable and hope that the leader would get the question wrong if I had any chance of winning.

The five choices were shown before the betting took place:

"Holiday", "Lucky Star", "Borderline", "Burning Up", "Like a Virgin"

All Madonna songs. Not my best topic. But I still had to bet half.

Question--Which of these songs did not appear on Madonna's self-titled debut album?

I knew for sure that "Holiday and "Borderline" did. I guessed "Burning Up". When there were 2 seconds left, I thought, "Maybe 'Like a Virgin' came later...", but before I could complete that thought, time ran out and "Like a Virgin" lit up as the correct answer. ARGH! Everybody in the restaurant got it wrong except for the leader, so I ended the night in a distant second.

But I had a lot of fun. I'll have to go back in a couple of weeks.

If you ever happen to be there on a Monday night, there's a pretty good live pub quiz almost next door at Wick's Pizza in Middletown. I was there last month with a big group, mostly family. We had to split into three teams. I think we won $20, $10, and $5 prizes. It goes by pretty fast, not much more than an hour.

It had an unusual format. I think there were about six groups of three questions. Within each group, the questions had different point values, like 2, 4, or 6 points. You got to decide which question was worth each point value, assigning the highest value to the answer you are surest of. But you don't really know, because they ask one question at a time, and you have to decide whether to declare it a 2, 4, or 6 point question before you hear the other questions. So there's a bit of strategy involved.

That is different. At the ones I play at here you assign the value after you see the question. Sometimes there are slam dunks and you assign the highest value. Then there are those you agonize over. You do know the categories ahead of time. And two of the four bonus questions have an assigned value and the other two you can bet either 2-10 and 2-20. If you get it right you get the value you bet if you miss it you lose half your bet.
