What's in It for You?

I've thought about this again with all the game show talk of recent days, especially the Kazoo statement. What if it really is all about having people she knows watch the show with her and feed her ego? Has she ever really said she cared about the money? Since I really want to know the answer, I'm not adding the cop out option. You vote for WGAS by not voting.

I know, for most people the answer is some of both. "I want to show how much I know and, if I can pick up some scratch along the way, all the better!" or "I really want the money, but I'd like to prove that I'm good at answering questions to do it". So, I've intentionally given only black and white choices. Think of it this way before you answer:

1. Money - As long as I win money, I'm fine with being shown as the world's biggest dumbass with easy questions, poor lifeline usage and winning almost in spite of myself.

2. Smarts - I just want to show how much of a smarty pants I am and I'd play even if it were just for points and a coupon redeemable for a Stuckey's Nut Roll in Nowhere, Arizona.

3. Glory - Dursted? Llama? Don't get to play FJ because I'm in the red? I don't care, I just want to be able to create an imdb entry for myself!

Given such absolute choices, I go with the caption of one of my favorite panel cartoons:

"I used to want to be rich and famous. Now I don't know. Rich may be enough."

Now I just need the opportunity ...

I gave myself a 3, but I'm really more of a 2.5. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a smarty, I don't like nut rolls but I'd gladly take a bag of M & Ms, and I love to perform.

In all of my game show appearances I rose to smarty heights but ended up with:

1. $1,000 from Cindy BAM and the glory of being possibly the only player in the history of the show who didn't get a postcard from Meredith, although she did tell me while giving me my departure hug that I had been one of her favorite contestants. And, I got to be on one of my favorite shows--CBS Sunday Morning--a clip from my BAM appearance was in a story about the ad agency that invented the Geico gecko.

2. $1,000, two pens, a tote bag, and a lovely glass picture frame and a picture to put in it from Jeopardy!

3. A round trip to LA and a watch from Crosswords. I haven't received the watch yet, but it's technically not due to arrive till mid August, even though I hear most other on this bored who were on Xwds have received theirs.

None of the above - or just for the fun of it.

While I wont deny that all three choices play a big factor in it - I've always wanted to be on a game show ever since I could remember, mainly because it looked like so much fun - especially Lets Make A Deal.

In trying to get to the essence, would I still want to be on WWTBAM for example if it was just me and the screen in the studio - no host, no audience, no money and no one knowing how I did? In a heartbeat.

So I would go for - it is just fun to do!

Of course, maybe she says this to everybody. Could she read it in my eyes that I thought her makeup was way too cakey? Did that upset her enough to withhold my postcard?

Like most it's a combination of all three. And I guess I have a measure of all three. Oh yes, my 1976 Break the Bank episode is forever memorialized on the internet along with me and Chuck and tuna.
When I was on J! and managed to win a game I thought I had reached the pinnacle of game show success. And then Greed called and I'm back in the game(s). And now I'm waiting for either TP and DoND (syndie) to call back. I feel that if you got the smarts why not play. That's partly why I play bar trivia, live or otherwise. I like the camaraderie and in the case of the live bar trivia you can win money or dinner.

Why I Want To Be On a Game Show

I think it's a combination of all 3 things. Sure, the money would be nice (if I won enough!).

The smarts and the glory are probably the two biggest reasons. I've watched game shows since I was a kid (some of my favorites were Tic Tac Dough and Joker's Wild-both of which I think SHOULD be revived) and I've always thought it would be fun to be on one.

Whenever I mention to people that I've tried out for Jeopardy! five times, it impresses them-I just wish it would impress the APs on Jeopardy!

The lady from my church who was on last month had a big viewing party, at which over 100 people showed up to see her win her first show. The local paper even did an article about it-although it was on page 2. I thought "gee, that looks like fun". If I EVER get on a game show, I'm definitely having a party.

I want to be on a game show so I can blog about it and write about it on message boards.

The money is secondary.

I just want to be famous.

I'm not smart enough to understand the difference between the second and third options.

2. I want everybody to see how smart I am.

3. I want everybody to see me, even if I'm stupid.

Or

2 = Typical MAWG around here.

3 = Typical WE/WE as known around here.

That's an excellent explanation, Fanny!

I can't vote- you have neither an "All of the Above" option nor (even MORE importantly) the WGAS in Gastonia option.

I voted for the money. I'd rather give up the other two choices than this one. (Want to send me that Capital One check and not air my episode at all, Michael Davies? I can live with that.) And I certainly don't care about meeting Meredith and getting a nice little note from Meredith after my taping.

But not just any game show would attract my attention with a big prize. WWTBAM was a game I wanted to play, that I liked playing, and that I still think I could be good at. Yes, one where my smarts would really make a difference. Not so for so many of those other reality shows and game operas out there.

And, in the beginning, WWTBAM was a game that I could have gotten on through my own trivia game efforts. I've watched Jeopardy for a long time, but I never went to the effort of trying to audition, because I always thought, "They won't pick me." Then WWTBAM came along with its Phone Game, and I could qualify without ever having a producer set eyes upon me.

They changed the selection rules, but it's too late to give up the dream.

Even if my original thoughts were right all along. :(

Better change it to the money if it's WWTBAM...cuz I'd use "famous" loosely...a couple of newspaper articles at best, and all anyone wants to know is what you won!

I read the post that goes with it, but I don't want to be on a game show. I'll go to Disneyland before I ever attend a game show audition again....

Hrmm...I didn't vote. I need a 'none of the above' option. (But for once I'd list to see that listed first and have it read 'none of the below'. Just for kicks.)

It really wasn't any of those things for me. The money is great, absolutely, but not a motivating factor. A chance to show my smart chops? Ehh...not really. Trivia is trivia. It's stuff you know or stuff you don't. There is little or no critical thinking involved. It's not really intelligence that we prove with most of these shows, but how much random information we've absorbed. Glory? Nah. It's fleeting and short-lived at best unless you're (un)lucky enough to end up in a "up the butt, Bob!" clip that will air on every gameshow bloopers show for the rest of your life.

So 'none of the below' it is. What it is for me is the chance to have an interesting, fun, unique, challenging, etcetcetc experience. The percentage of folks who will have had such an opportunity it small, and I'm on of them. How cool is that? It makes a great story. :-)
