The Tigers traded Ivan Rodriguez to the Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth.

My lasting memory of I-Rod is the final out of the Division Series in 2003. The game ended with Rodriguez holding onto the ball after tagging out the would-be tying runner at the plate. The runner sent him head over heels, but he held onto the ball.

Ten minutes after the game ended, he was doing post-game interviews, the ball still in his hand. This may be my imagination, but I think it was dented from the force of his grip. --Bob

I have been amazed I-Rod is still playing, as he must be 75 by now. But it's a fair swap, as Farnsworth is on the way down.

I'm happy, we just didn't need Farnsworth anymore and as far as I'm concerned we got Pudge for pratically nothing.

It seems that way because he has been around for so long, but he was only 19 when he broke in with the Rangers. He caught Nolan Ryan, who has a son older than him. Pudge is now 36 and can still contribute. This was a good deal for the Yankees.

BTW, Fisk played until 1993, so you don't have to feel that outdated on baseball....

You expect him to put a pimp hat on an old grey head? At least he hasn't had to go the Mercury Morris and Wade Boggs route. Did they not get paid enough during their career? Are they that hard up?

Note: Frazier is a Knicks broadcaster. I was at the Knicks game this year and he was here. I was trying to devise a plot with my nephews wherein they would distract the guards at the floor seat entry and I could go swoon over him.

The last Knicks game I saw on tv one of our guys did an interview with him and he is still cool as hell.

I know a Young Lady who referred to Keith Hernandez as "the guy from Seinfeld."

Summary:
Jorge got hurt, had surgery, and George... I mean Hank... has the money to rent Pudge for two months.


BTW, Jorge is my mom's favorite player by far.

Fisk? 1980?

Oh, fan, how cute. I just got what you meant.

Because I am pretty certain I saw Fisk play in the early 1990s.

It doesn't seem that long ago that Pudge was playing in AA as a highly touted catching prospect for the Rangers. I remember some of the details around his callup. He was at AA Tulsa, and he was about to get married. The Rangers were in Chicago to play the White Sox, and it seems like Pudge had to rush his wedding so that he could get to Chicago.

And now when I see people wonder how old he is and how he could still be playing, I feel old myself.

But Pudge was big for the Rangers in the late 90s when they played (and lost to) the Yankees in three different Division Series. Now his journey to the dark side is complete...

I find it hard to believe that Yankee fans seem to think this is a good thing.

My thoughts

1) Are the Yankees that confident in Jose Veres & especially David Robertson? Remember, LaTroy is now an Astro. Well, maybe that's a good thing.

2) Do they really need a hitting catcher? Pudge's power has been on the decline for a while now, but he still has a decent average, but he has never drawn many walks. More importantly, his catching skills have eroded significantly, and he will be replacing one of the top defensive catchers in the game (Molina).

3) Is it wise to give the appearance that the old Yankee tradition of stocking up on greybeards has returned? This smells of Hank trying to be just like dear old dad.


But, other than that, I love the trade.

But, other than that, I love the trade.

1. My confidence is in the ability of Joe Girardia and Dave Eiland to manage a bullpen. Torre's Achillies heel was his tendancy to rely on only some of his relievers, and as a result, when he had to go to his less-favorite guys, they hadn't gotten enough work to be reliable. The strongest part of this team since the All-Star game is the bullpen. By the way, one of the guys who had been in Torre's doghouse was Farnsworth. Girardi/Eiland have turned a wild fireballer into a great 8th inning guy.

2. The Yankees need hitting more than anything right now. I will take a .295 catcher who has playoff experience over a .220 catcher.

3. The Yankees used to sign free agent greybeards. This is a two-month (hopefully, 3-month) rent-a-player obtained through trade. The risk is worth taking.

If Manny gets traded to Florida, I send Theo Epstein a thank you note.

Only 1 game behind Boston, and (I never thought I'd say this) only 3 behind Tampa Bay. August will be a tough month.
