I don't have a problem if other people believe that.

Let's face it, a campaign that just said, "You agree with me, not him, so vote for me," wouldn't go much of anywhere.

But, as my old Pappy used to say, the biggest mistake anyone can make is believing their own press releases.

I have no hidden agenda, just curious what serious Hillary supporters like yourself are gonna do? There's lots of bad blood and I'm curious how you think that will turn out?

If it's Obama vs. McCain, I vote for McCain, no doubt. At one time, I mulled the idea of voting for Bob Barr, but I've dismissed that. It's kind of like saying that I'm punishing Obama by only casting 1/2 a vote for him. Under our system of presidential elections (except for ME and NE), unless a third party candidate has a chance to win a state, by voting for him (or not voting at all), I'm essentially saying my choice is worth as much as that of some knucklehead who can't be bothered to drive to the polls. I value my vote too much for that.

We are being asked which of the two people on the ballot will be the best president of the USA. I have to make a choice on that basis. Obama is not qualified, by experience, by judgment, by character, by integrity, by temperament and very probably by his positions on many if not most issues (I can't say for sure since I don't know where he stands on most issues). While he possibly is closer to my views on some issues than McCain is, that by itself doesn't erase the rest of the equation.

In addition, I think the Democratic party is fundamentally badly broken right now and an Obama election will turn into a huge disaster that will send the country spinning to the right just as it did after Carter (who had integrity and a sincere belief in what he was doing). The way to fix that is to make sure they realize the error of their ways by suffering as big a defeat as possible.

It's kind of like saying that I'm punishing Obama by only casting 1/2 a vote for him.

I think I will hold my breath 'til I turn blue. It will have the same effect.

I know I am going to start the flame throwing again but here goes.

The way I see it is that he has become that symbol to many. When I read that a large majority of blacks voted for him simply because he is black, that tells me a lot. It tells me that blacks see him as a potential Messiah for all of their problems; someone that empathizes with the suffering they have endured over the years; someone that can finally free them from the oppression they have suffered over the years. Whether that's true or not, that's how they view the potential of his becoming president. PRESIDENT! And, that is one of the things that makes his presidency such a potential danger. People blindly voting for him without any regard for the things he actually represents. But, simply voting for him because he is the same color as they are. What a great way to "stick it" to whitey. I don't consider myself a racist in any way, shape or form and if he espoused the same ideology as me I would vote for him as well. But, to walk into a voting booth without having any idea of what the man stands for and blindly push to button next to his name simply because he is black, is just plain wrong, IMO. But, it will be done - thousands and thousands of times.

It's for a beer or separate thread sometime, but I can tell you stories about Carter - I suffered through his governorship as well as his Presidency.

But, your thought process was very sound in the results of his term and a potential Obama one. We may disagree on the political spectrum, but that was a very good example and comparison.




Thread creep: I do wish Carter would hold to the previously unbroken taboo of former Presidents complaining about the current one. It's bad form for either side to do so.

It's not wrong. Citizens have the right to vote. They can base their vote on anything they want. Skin color, age, height, gender, or flip a coin when they get in the voting booth. No doubt some will not vote for him because he is black. The important thing is that people vote.

Wrong as in illegal, no. Wrong as in not a smart way to vote for president, yes.

There have been a lot of symbolic figures through history, people like George Washington, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King to name a few. But they became symbols because of their accomplishments, and once they realized their stature, they spent their lives trying to live up to their stature.

Obama has accomplished virtually nothing his entire life other than maneuvering his way through the Democratic nomination process and getting opponents tossed off the ballot literally or figuratively in a few Illinois elections.

Since he realizes that based on accomplishments or reliable political intentions, he has nothing to offer, he resorts to demagoguery, appealing to black voters and guilty white voters and naive young voters as a symbol of "hope, change, unity, post-racial consciousness" and other empty phrases.

What is more scary to me is that it appears a lot of the time that he actually believes his own hype. It's one thing to be an empty suit conman gulling people into believing you are one of the great diplomats and statesmen of all time. It's far more dangerous for this country for him to believe that shtick himself.

"It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."

IIRC, Clinton (Bill not Hillary), Gore, and Kerry each got at least 80% of the black vote. For better or worse, Blacks voting for the same candidate is not a new phenomenon, and it never bothered the SSS's of the world until those votes didn't fall their way.
