Moderator People

While it is no big deal for this instance, I have a request.

My post header about frogman being in the hot seat was edited. It was not edited by me. I assume that who did it was one of the moderators.

I request that each of you promise to not do any editing of any post that any regular poster here makes, without first requesting that the poster do the editing on their own.

Again, I totally understand that the edit to my post was appropriate and if I had thought about it or had been requested, I would have done it.

This is not the first time that a moderator has done such a thing. I would like it to never happen again.

Please respond to this post, if you are a moderator, and either accept my request ( and promise) or decline my request.

It wasn't me. I never edit other people's posts. If some unforeseen situation were to transpire that rose to a level of urgency that even I couldn't overlook, it's conceivable that I might use my emergency powers, but if I did, I would leave behind an explanation of my actions.

I think in this case it was well intentioned, but ill-advised, since whenever something like this happens, it seems to inspire wild conspiracy theories about moderators abusing their awesome powers.

Good intentions are good, for sure. But an action like this messes with free speech, which free speech is also good. Thanks for listening to Pea's request.

I sign off for a while and miss all the excitement! :P

Pea's request sounds reasonable in this case, because she was still online and available to immediately respond to a request to edit the subject line, herself. What if she had logged off, though? How long should an inaccurate subject line causing a whole lot of unjustified excitement remain uncorrected in that case, while waiting for the original poster to respond?

TheConfessor's approach--to make the change while leaving a note about doing so--seem reasonable, given that the moderators don't do these edits lightly.

I have edited no header.

I do not believe I would ever edit a header. I have edited a post (once). I cannot remember the reason, but the original poster thanked me for doing it. I also deleted the thread from our 'guest' a week or so ago. I noticed later that there was some tumult over this, as opposed to just the offending thread. It was early in the day, I was still half asleep, and about half of the responses quoted the original post, so I flushed them all, without thinking of how the responders would feel. For this I apologize. To those who may have groused but were not responders, there is no apology. This matter did not concern you, IMO.

That being said, if I retained the responses in the offending thread, I would have removed the original post from all quotations, for removing just the original, while leaving the text elsewhere, would be meaningless. This is an instance where I feel editing a regular poster's post would be legitimate. There certainly have to be others.

For this reason, while I agree with the spirit of Pea's request, I respectfully decline to abide by the letter of said request.

Actually, I was listening to Barry Goldwater. "Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

Here's a good "free speech" for you:

It wasn't me either, and I would not do so unless specifically asked....

I can only recall 2 times I edited someone else's post on my own:

1. I edited one of Pea's headers to "Bite Me" early on in this Bored's history, though I can't find the thread or remember why I did it. But I know it was a joke that was well received by Pea, so it was nothing devious...

2. I removed the RIP from Sir G's post about Patrick Swayze revealing he had a likely fatal form of cancer after the wave of negative response from BB's over a RIP being posted for someone not yet dead....

At least he is wearing a shirt and not banging on bongos.

You can see it now. Just imagine the same subject line without the added "- NOT!" I would have left it the way it was, since it wasn't a life or death situation. Oh, wait. That's what I did. If Pea wants to restore her original subject line, she can.

If all mistakes and typos in "Bored" history had been fixed by moderators, much of the traditional "Jipter" lingo would not exist today.

Ha! Ha!

I think that Riggins shaves everywhere.

It wasn't me either. I'm pretty much with TheConfessor on this one -- I can imagine circumstances arising where I would use my Moderator powers, but given the reaction early in our tenure here, I'll be very, very gunshy about doing so. That doesn't apply, of course, to obvious spam. --Bob

Thank you to the moderators who have responded so far.

After hearing from tubadave and bobjuch (I think they are the only ones who have yet to respond), I will make a different request, intended to be one all of you are comfortable accepting.

It's a request, silly, not a demand.

Not I, sez Dave.

Sorry not to have responded more quickly. I haven't logged in here since early in the week, and I had to search back through Pea's posts to figure out what everyone was talking about. I could have easily overlooked this thread if it wasn't for the good Troll dropping me a note on my Facebook page and giving me a heads up.

I think there have probably been occasional errors, lapses in judgment, etc., but there hasn't been, to the best of my knowledge, a case where someone with the ability to edit posts has truly abused that ability. The six of us that can actually do it have all taken a very hands off approach that I think works well, and seems to be favored by most here. With the exception of spam, I have neither deleted a post on this Bored nor edited one that wasn't my own. I have no reason to believe that I'll be taking either action at any point, and I certainly have no intention of doing so. This does, I think, honor the spirit of Pea's request.

However, much like Eyégor said, I cannot promise outright that I will never do either of those things, because I have no way of knowing if a situation will ever arise in which the best course of action might be to edit or delete something immediately, without waiting for the poster. As the person who is the owner of (and therefore legally responsible for) the web space and domain name, I always have to reserve the right to delete something if I think it has the potential to get me in trouble with the law. I love this community and all, but I'm not spending time in any Federal Pound Me In The Ass Prison because someone decided to share their kiddie porn collection.

(NOTE FOR THE HUMOR IMPAIRED: That was a joke. I don't actually think any of you has a kiddie porn collection. )

I will promise that (with the exception of extreme cases and/or potential legal problems) I will always make every reasonable effort to have a poster change or remove something before I do it myself. Most all of the regulars have been around a long time, and I know they aren't going to be doing anything dumb, so I'm not really concerned.

Anyway, this has turned into one of my typical wordy responses, so I'll shut up now.

Okie dokie,

So, we can assume that bobjuch did the editing this time.

I assume he has been away from his computer.

I will wait and move this forward if necessary until he sees it and responds.

I do appreciate how you all took my request to heart and answered thoughtfully.
