Finally got wireless internet!
Didn't plan to, but my satellite internet provider said I couldn't get good reception unless I had wireless, so they gave me a router and hooked me up.
One happy camper.
Write when you can.

Welcome to the wonderful world of broadband. I hope that whoever hooked you up did so securely.

Yes, I made sure of that!

Congratulations, but they GAVE you a router? Sounds a little odd. I'd make sure a rental fee or high purchase price doesn't show up on the first billing. Wireless routers are cheap.
I'm ignorant about satellite internet connections. Why is wireless better than wired in this case, besides the obvious wiring and mobility or not issues? I would think both versions ultimately have to come from the receiving dish.

What they do is give you a small "receiver" which has an ethernet cord to plug into your computer.
My problem is that the best reception I get is on top of my bookcase in a spare bedroom on my second floor -- a place inconvenient to set up my computer.
They gave me a router because if I can't get reception (I had a lot of roaming) then I can cancel...
It's a bit expensive ($36 a month) but in my area, ALL wireless is expensive. We don't have Verizon or AT&T wireless here ...
Hope that 'splains it ...

No, 'fraid not.
You said your have satellite but then talk about wireless and cell providers.
Is what they did was give you a satellite receiver that now plugs into a WiFi transmitter that you then connect to from your laptop?

Verizon or AT&T wireless
In communities where Verizon and AT&T offer internet service, rates go down. My brother (in Albany) gets Verizon wireless INTERNET service for something like $15 a month ... It could be the area has more competition.
I can't believe what we have to pay here in Rochester. NOBODY can get any kind of internet service for less than $30 a month ...
Hope THIS helps!
