My brother-in-law has been transferred to Galesburg, IL. Are you familiar with the city and area?

I don't remember for sure which part of IL the Tennis Dude's in, but you might also want to check with LilyVonSchtupp and Geoffil.

Even though I'm only about 25 miles from one part of Illinois, I'm about 300 from Galesburg, so I can't help you much.

What do you think this is, some little rinky dink state just because we're 1/10 the size of Texas and everyone knows everyone else? Just because I've played in every pool hall in the state doesn't mean Illinois's just a few backwoods farming towns....

Okay, Wikipedia has explained to me who Dawn Clark Netsch is and what the pool reference means. But has something happened recently that put her in the news? Or is this an MM that only Illini have a chance of appreciating?

Well..... yes, I guess.

But the pool ad was classic. My second all-time favorite political memory next to Admiral Stockdale's 15 minutes of fame....

Please do not read an insult into my question, Ms. Netsch. I just thought I remembered the Tennis Dude mentioning Galesburg. FTR, my brother-in-law is an Illinois native, I just wanted to be able to provide my sister with some additional information. They are looking for houses in the Quad-Cities area.

I used to live in Peoria. Galesburg is like Peoria but smaller. It's a big railroad hub and known as the birthplace of Carl Sandburg.

Considering the price of gas, why are they looking in the Quad Cities area for a home? That'd be at least a 60 mile drive.

Bob asks a good question, though. If you're getting a job in a new town, it makes sense to live near there, too, in the absence of reasons to the contrary.

My hunch is that real estate prices in Galesburg aren't like those in SoCal or NYC, requiring a 60 mile commute to find something more affordable.

Yes, a little familiar with G'burg.

Housing: North of North Street is better than south of N St
Schools: Grade schools are pretty uniform in instruction. Churchill Jr High is preferable to Lombard Jr High.

Quad Cities will be a 40 minute drive on I-74.

Let me know is more specifics are desired.
