LOS ANGELES - Actress Estelle Getty has died at the age of 84.


Her son, Carl Gettleman, says the co-star of the TV show "The Golden Girls" died early Tuesday at home in Los Angeles. Gettleman says she suffered from advanced dementia.

The diminutive actress spent 40 years struggling for success before landing the role of a lifetime in 1985, playing the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on "The Golden Girls."

Aww, that's a shame. I liked her.

This makes me sad - I liked "The Golden Girls" and even though Getty was not much older (if any) than the other three, she played Sophia perfectly.

RIP very much indeed. A very funny & sweet lady.

I also resented very much her employed attendant giving interviews for the last 10 years or so about how out-of-it she was. I don't resent senile dementia being listed in cause of death, but tabloid-show interviews by her paid staff were way out of line in my book.

We saw Rue McClanahan last year at a book signing in Asheville, and she said Estelle Getty had been out of it for ten years. She was sad because she liked her a lot.

When the show started, those two were the second-stringers, because Betty White and Bea Arthur were both well-known on stage and in TV, and got the big contracts for The Golden Girls. I think McClanahan was saying they bonded a good bit because they were the minor leaguers, at least the first year or two.

Her book is mildly amusing, if anyone wants it. I don't see myself reading it again. My First Five Husbands...and the Ones That Got Away.
