QoD July 22, 2008

2 points per correct answer, 10 points if you get all four correct. Answer with a Spoiler tag in one post in this thread before noon CDT on Wednesday, July 23.

No outside sources allowed. Just take your best guess.

1. What European country has lakes Paasselkä, Päijänne, Pielinen, Pihlajavesi, and Pohjalampi?

2. Which of these is not the name of a Roman Catholic Pope: Paschal, Paul, Pelagius, Peter, Philip, or Pius?

3. Pahoehoe is made of what material?

4. What are the five disciplines of the Modern Pentathlon? I’m not looking for specific events but just the general sports.

4. swimming, shooting, running, and um, fencing and horseback riding. (I would say dressage, but that's another one of those fancy words where I know it has something to do with horses, but not really what it means. If you need something more specific than horseback riding, I'm SOL).

Pahoehoe is the prettiest kind of lava. It's made of basalt.

4. What are the five disciplines of the Modern Pentathlon? I’m not looking for specific events but just the general sports.
It's all old-fashioned soldier stuff -- fencing, shooting, swimming, running, and horse-jumping.

Spoiler

1. Iceland

2. Philip (if you consider Peter "Roman Catholic." Christianity wasn't called "Catholic" until 107 AD, 40 years after Peter's death. The "Roman" part didn't come in until Constantine at the earliest. The Roman Catholic Church claims Peter as its first Pope, but Peter himself probably never considered himself such, especially in the sense we think of. No other Pope has used the name "Peter," out of deference to the apostle. </soapbox>)

3. Coconut?

4. Running, shooting, swimming, fencing, archery

1. What European country has lakes Paasselkä, Päijänne, Pielinen, Pihlajavesi, and Pohjalampi?

With all those umlauts and vowels, it must be Finland

2. Which of these is not the name of a Roman Catholic Pope: Paschal, Paul, Pelagius, Peter, Philip, or Pius?

I'm thinking it's one of the "P" ones... :-) Well, it ain't Paul, Peter or Pius, for sure. I'm thinking Pascal sounds papal. That leaves Pelagius and Philip. Pelagius doesn't sound papal (which means it's probably right!), so I'll go with it.

3. Pahoehoe is made of what material?

Rock. Specifically, cooled lava.

4. What are the five disciplines of the Modern Pentathlon? I’m not looking for specific events but just the general sports.

I have absolutely no idea. I'll guess long distance running, short distance running, swimming, bicycling and sex. No wait, make that last one long jump.

Finland has a whole bunch of lakes, I think.

2. Which of these is not the name of a Roman Catholic Pope: Paschal, Paul, Pelagius, Peter, Philip, or Pius?

Spoiler
1. What European country has lakes Paasselkä, Päijänne, Pielinen, Pihlajavesi, and Pohjalampi? -- Finland, I hope

2. Which of these is not the name of a Roman Catholic Pope: Paschal, Paul, Pelagius, Peter, Philip, or Pius? -- Does Peter (there was only one) count as "Roman Catholic"? I'm guessing that he does, and therefore I'll go with Philip

3. Pahoehoe is made of what material? -- coconut?

4. What are the five disciplines of the Modern Pentathlon? I’m not looking for specific events but just the general sports. -- Well, I know it's supposed to cover the disciplines a military officer should be able to master on the battlefield, so I'll go with track, swimming, shooting, equestrian, and beach volleyball. OK, maybe not the last one -- change it to fencing.
