Concert last night

Last night my wife and I went to a concert called Hippiefest which featured artists from the '60s and '70s.

The acts were Jonathan Edwards ("Sunshine go away today..."), Joey Molland from Badfinger, Melanie (Anyone remember Brand New Key?), The Turtles, Jack Bruce from Cream, and the final act was Eric Burdon and the Animals.

For me the highlight was hearing House of the Rising Sun live, but the entire concert was great.

Oooh, a concert thread. There was a free Melissa Manchester Saturday night. It was in a park in Marina del Rey. So I had the good fortune to enjoy the concert and picnic with four lovely ladies.

It was 1971; I had graduated from high school and gone to the bustling metropolis of Miami, OK, to work in a cousin's mop factory. I came home for a visit in March and hooked up with some friends from high school. They were going to a birthday party for three people whose birthdays fell on the same day. Since I marginally knew one of them, I tagged along. The party was at one of the celebrants' houses and there were quite a few kids there. One of the gifts that the celebrant received was "Live at Margie's Birthday Party", an album by Melanie, and given because the celebrant's name was Margie. Although "Brand New Key" was not on that album, the artist became a hit with Margie and she purchased the 45 of "Brand New Key" when it came out. Her parents wouldn't let her play it after they heard it once because they, being good Southern Baptists from Oklahoma, thought it was full of sexual innuendo. So when she started regularly dating a young man, he let her play the record at his house. The two of them ended up getting married and the young man went on to become a contestant on Primetime BAM.

No jokes from me about names. The only Melvin I can recall is Melvin Laird, former Secretary of Defense in the Nixon administration.

I don't like that at all. It might just be me, but I don't think that being coy about mock prurience ever goes over well, mostly because I don't think they could (or would) use that as a conversation starter on air.

You should try a change to something like "Melanie introduced me to my wife" or "Brand New Key was the basis for our romance" or something like that.

It's hard to know just what will catch the eye of the contestant selection staff. On one occasion I posted a bunch of anecdotes to the Bored and asked for help in selecting the five I should use - but that didn't get me any further than the other times. But when the next online test rolls around, I'll be ready to try again.

What brought this on? My first post in this thread wasn't until almost 6 am! Talk to Uly about not sleeping, he's worse than I am.

Heat doesn't help. When I went upstairs last night around midnight, it was still 93 degrees in my bedroom. With windows open and two fans going at high, it had cooled down to a brisk 90 by the time I went to bed a couple hours later. With the two afore-mentioned fans still going, it was a chilly 83 a little before 5 am. Ha!

I'd forgotten until now how much I liked Lay Down (the version with, IIRC, the Edwin Hawkins Singers).

A couple friends saw The Turtles as part of a 60s show in Wildwood last spring and said they were really good. Mostly a different concert lineup, though.

It's been 99+ with a heat index of 105 for the past few days. I was out to dinner last night and got home about 10:45 and the temperature was 79. I actually thought it seemed cool!

There is no way I could sleep if I didn't have a/c.

How was Jack Bruce? He is in the OC later this month, I am hoping he will stick around and play with Winwood in August at Verizon. Kind of a Blind Faith reunion, even though Rick Gretch was the BF guitarist who joined Clapton from Cream and Winwood from Traffic. Gretch died some time ago, along with Jim Capaldi from Traffic. And doggone it! Why can't Mason/Winwood reunite after all of these years? They both sound great! They haven't played together since The Best of Traffic tour in the US anyway and that was way back in 1970. They both can't still hate each other after all those years? or at least they can put their feelings aside for one night of magic!

Jack Bruce was good. Like the other acts he was on for about 30 minutes and played most of his biggest hits. He played Sunshine of Your Love, I Feel Free and others and closed with a great version of White Room.

Sounds outstanding! Maybe he, Clapton and Winwood can celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Blind Faith next year? So great to hear Clapton and Winwood on Steve's latest CD!

I've seen the Turtles (in good voice and funny!), and the last band I was in actually opened for Eric Burdon (and the group he was calling the Animals) in Rochester NY way back in the early 80's. Actually didn't see him except when he was onstage.

The drummer was a nice guy.

Glad to see that Molland is keeping the Badfinger torch lit, but it's a sad thing..two of the original members committed suicide within a few years of each other. One of them, Pete Ham, was the singer on all of their best known hits. They were screwed so badly in their business dealings, and probably didn't get the proper promotion on top of that, given the chaos at Apple Records...a very sad story. They deserved much better.

These types of concerts usually are a blast, as long as you get authentic group members. Given the advancing ages of our heroes, that becomes harder and harder.
