QoD July 21, 2008

2 points per correct answer, 10 points if you get all four correct. Answer with a Spoiler tag in one post in this thread before noon CDT on Tuesday, July 22.

No outside sources allowed. Just take your best guess.

1. What U.S. states and Canadian provinces border Lake Ontario?

2. What name was shared by the first three Holy Roman Emperors?

3. What country is the largest producer of orange juice?

4. According to the IOC, how many Olympic Games have been held in the modern era? I’m looking for the total of Summer and Winter games actually contested prior to this year’s in Beijing.

That is tough! Atlanta was 26 so Beijing is 29. Last Winter games was #20. But not sure if the games cancelled due to the world wars got a number or not. Counting back from Atlanta to 1900 suggests they did so only 25 of the 28 occurred. That leaves 45?

Hmm, seems Winter games had the number adjusted for cancelled games while the Summer games did not. Very odd. But perhaps I stumbled onto the correct answer after all but for the wrong reason.

1. What U.S. states and Canadian provinces border Lake Ontario?

I think New York is the only state. Ontario and maybe Quebec on the Canadian side. I'll go with all 3

2. What name was shared by the first three Holy Roman Emperors?

O names, huh? Orville, Oscar, Orlando, ooh. How about Octavian?

3. What country is the largest producer of orange juice?

U.S. is way obvious so of course it's not right. Hmm. Spain?

4. According to the IOC, how many Olympic Games have been held in the modern era? I’m looking for the total of Summer and Winter games actually contested prior to this year’s in Beijing.

Summer - 1896 - 2004 except 1916, 1940 and 1944 - 25 in total
Winter - hmmm - 1928? - 2006 - 19 in total

Ontario and New York

2. What name was shared by the first three Holy Roman Emperors?

3. What country is the largest producer of orange juice?

The US. Probably wrong, but I got nuthin' else.

4. According to the IOC, how many Olympic Games have been held in the modern era? I’m looking for the total of Summer and Winter games actually contested prior to this year’s in Beijing.

OK, let's work this out. They started with the first in Athens in 1896. So the '92 Barcelona summer games were the 25th, which means the 2004 games in Athens were the 28th summer games. However, I believe 3 games were cancelled due to world wars (1916, 1940 and 1944), which means only 25 summer games were contested. The boycot years of 1980 and 1984 were held, regardless of the boycots.

Next, there's the winter side. I know they started in 1924 in Chamonix, and I distinctly remember that they called the Turin games in 2006 the 20th. They didn't switch the date to the off-year until the 1990s, so there were also some scheduled games for 1940 and 1944 for the winter games, which means that they were probably cancelled also. That means 18 were contested. So:

25 + 18 = 43
