The Book of 1885 decrees that this week's theme is...money! Filthy lucre. The root of all evil. Even when denominated in buffalo nickels.

So, there's an old gold mine outside of town. But our pintsized citizens don't have to dig for it or anything so tedious and untelegenic as that! No, our town council just follows a map to the mine (watch out for the bats!) and finds a treasure chest there, with 375 nickels in it! More than the town's income for an entire episode!

And, in a decision more fitting for a company town than any free enterprise system, the council gets to decide how to distribute the money. Rather than letting the citizens squander it on personal luxuries, they wisely invest in some recreational goods (baseball equipment, guitars, a kite) for the whole town to share.

Meanwhile, the producers trick us! Usually, they introduce one new kid from the ranks of the obscure to share the air time with the established favorites and that kid is destined to win the gold star. But this week, we meet not one but three new faces! Who will the winner be?

After the theme-based challenge (money problems are like an egg-tossing contest, don'tcha know) we finally learn that two of the new kids are trying too obviously for that gold star, while Nathan, the quiet home-schooled kid who lacks social skills but may be slightly obsessive-compulsive about working responsibly late into the night, is the one truly deserving!

Oh, and Jared becomes the "Bill Gates of Bonanza City" and splurges on some new duds that look like the wild west version of the costume Big J was wearing last night.

I don't know, it is geting an little tired. Greg was a brat to that little kid. I really felt bad for him. And the young lady who took food and then tried to sell it left me cold.

I think someone (Marley?) had asked about how they kept their clothes clean and they finnaly showed it.

They just showed the council briefly discussing what to do with the money (Laurel didn't even want to go to the mine, in the first place!), then they arrived at the dining hall with the loot they must have purchased from the general store.

Greg does seem to shift back and forth from evil bully to kindly big brother a lot. When he suddenly apologized to Nathan and became his advocate for the gold star, I knew the deal was secure.

And, yeah, I was wondering about the laundry last week. Silly me, they didn't show the old-fashioned scrubbing boards because they had already scheduled it to be one of this week's themes. Now, just like the chickens which have all disappeared from the screen since the butchering episode, we'll probably never see the laundry again.

But the laborers still must have had an incredible job after last week's baked bean challenge.
