Friday evening, GW is outside grilling dinner, I'm inside preparing other stuff for dinner. She comes in and says "We need to call a tree guy." She brings me outside and shows me why.
An oak tree toward the back of our yard has split about seven feet up. It's leaning between two other trees, hung up there and still connected to the trunk where it split. It's leaning over our nice new white vinyl fence, and well over our neighbor's yard. Both yards are fenced in for dogs, so there's no way to bring in a cherry picker. I think whoever takes it down will have to climb along it to top it. The high end is probably still about 30' up.
One guy came by yesterday, and quoted us $400. With no knowledge of what it should cost, we both thought that was pretty good. Another guy comes by in a half hour, and we have a call into a third. The tree looks to be in no danger of immediate collapse. It's pretty well wedged in, and as I said, still connected to the base of the trunk. It appears to have rotted halfway through the trunk, and split at the rot in a recent (Wednesday? Thursday?) wind/thunderstorm. Why it rotted, we have no idea.
Just what we needed. Another expense this month.

I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.
