My home computer problem was resolved by using XP's recovery system to restore the OS to a previous "save point", so no lasting harm done. I did caution my son not to do something as major as reloading the OS without consulting with me first, particularly since it was MY computer to start with.

I've been sneezing and having bouts of eye-watering the last couple days, probably the reaction of my body to the Ohio River Valley poor air quality (and allergens) after being two weeks in the clear crisp air of the great Northwest.

The first news is good. Reinstalling XP over itself wouldn't do anything to make it run faster anyway. It would take a clean install. You might consider buying the RegistrySmart program online. That will clean up junk in your registry that can slow down things. The free program CCleaner will help too.
