The gas price increase, mixed with early summer in Texas, has led to a slight financial bind around our house. I would take a second job, but Mrs. Rexer (a strong-willed individual) needs me to help out with Annie (another strong-willed individual) as much as possible around the house. So, instead of setting up a spamming operation, or an on-line Ponzi scheme, I would like to ask if any of you are adding to your income while at home. I know I could ebay more Tupperware, but what is left in the Tupperware stash is not really enough to help us.

so...any suggestions?

I know this sounds not fun, but are there any people who need freelance transcription or typing jobs done? I once considered telecomuting for a past boss, but it didn't pan out, cause he was a doofus. But, still.

I don't know your area of expertise, but when I was in the employment reserve a few years back, I took on some freelance technical writing. People who know the jargon and are fast learners are useful in my field.

If your profession is amenable to that sort of thing, check the Yahoo! groups to see if there's a writing group for it. You may be able to get some contacts through there as well.

Are you a good hold'em player?

Do you have a topic you could teach in a Continuing Education program? School districts are very open to residents teaching one- and two-session courses on all sorts of topics. There are also Parks & Recreation Departments too. Libraries also pay for one-session programs.

For example, I teach courses on How to Buy and Sell on eBay, How to Declutter Your Home, Getting Organized for the Holidays, How to Enter Online Contests and Sweepstakes and ... HOW TO BECOME A GAME SHOW CONTESTANT!!

Be sure to get paid BY THE PARTICIPANT, rather than hourly. Once I had 30 people take my ebay class and I got $20 a student or $600 for a 4-hour class.

I don't know if there is some craft you do that could be an added income.

I could never get a good hourly rate for my quilts, but I could get a return on investment for the materials I use to make them.

I do know that there are a few items in my arsenal that I could get profitable $ with that are very easy to make.

We have local craft fairs that you can get in. But you have to be careful about the ones that require a tax id number.

Sperm bank; a little manual labor involved, but a pretty good payoff at the end.

I sell afghans every now and then, but not to make a profit. I might make some money sometimes, but I'm happy just to get the price of the yarn back.

I'm going to be doing it anyway, so at least that way my supplies are free. All of my family and friends have at least a two or three of them already, so better to at least get the cost back than to just have them stack up around the house. Ha!

With all of the advances in the quality of machine made items, it's tough to make a living actually doing stuff by hand, because of all the time invested. Definitely not a way to make a quick buck!

Rexer, I know you can earn two or three hundred a month donating (well, I guess it's not donating) plasma. It does take a couple of hours, I understand, but I hear it's relatively painless, you get paid, and you're helping out.

Um, wintergreen, due to Mrs. Rexer's health issues, it is vital she not get pregnant, so I have, um, taken steps to insure this does not happen, and these steps make your suggestion, er, impossible.

I know people who photograph bands/groups and make $$ doing it.

How bout a professional dog walker? (Not to be funny, but many elderly or disabled folks have pets they cannot take care of fully. My mother is one of them. We are presently considering looking at this since she is now home from the hospital but confined to a wheelchair, and her two dogs need walking!)

What about delivering newspapers?
