Stanley Druckenmiller, hedge fund financier, likely to be the principal owner, but the former 'burgher has said he would let Dan and Art II run the team as long as they want to.

This has actually been going on for two years, as the Steelers have been in technical violation of NFL ownership rules (no one person controls at least 30% of the team, and the Rooney family has plenty of gambling-related interests, another NFL non-no).

I know that the Rooneys will most likely still be in charge, but it will be weird to think of the principal owner not being a Rooney.

Well...sometimes change is good! And with an uncapped year looming in 2010, maybe it will be good to have an owner/investor with deep pockets.

I've posted on this before--but Steelers fans should be grateful compared to what is happening in Buffalo. Ralph Wilson is so far refusing to sell the team and his daughter, who would inherit it if he so chose, couldn't afford the inheritance taxes. Therefore, he is likely to leave the team to his estate who will be legally obligated to take the highest bid--with the end result that the guys in Toronto, some Rupert Murdoch type who wants to move a team to Los Angeles, or just about anyone will wind up with the team.

At least a 50-50 chance we lose the Bills in the next five years--Ralph is almost 90.

It would indeed be strange for someone not named Rooney to own the Steelers. The Rooney family has always been one of the few NFL owners that I wholeheartedly admired.
