OMG - an on topic post!
Don't know if you all are aware, but NYC auditions are sold out through the end of July. There is an exception if you go to one of the first season 7 tapings starting July 22.
No word yet as to whether there will be August auditions in NYC since it looks like production will be shutting down for the month. Meredith will be in Beijing, and there's no hint of guest host tapings yet.
There are the three road auditions the week of August 13 in Minneapolis, Detroit and Washington, DC. That's it so far for the month.
20% of the season will have taped by the end of July, so if you're on the auditioning fence, factor that into your calculations. Season 7 taping ends the second week of November.

Are there any stats on how many people apply at the beginning of the season vs the end (and I mean just in NY so it's apples to apples)? I wonder if people might be slightly better off waiting until later, if there are less people auditioning.
I have no idea, and I'm certainly not suggesting that people aren't consistently interested in the show or auditioning throughout the season. I'm just wondering since I know from reading posts that it seems like the beginning of the season is a huge waiting game, whereas when I auditioned in September, I got the call the same week as my audition.

I'd say there's two schools of thought here. Logically, the more shows remaining in the season, the better your chances of becoming a contestant.
The other side, as you discovered, is that there are potential contestants that strike TPTB's fancy during a late-season audition. You're top of mind, and the thousands of people that auditioned early (and the hundreds already in the pool) aren't.
If TPTB's running short of contestants during a particular taping period, it's easier to call up somebody in greater NYC in short notice to fill the hole. You know from having been on the show that sometimes they burn through contestants, and other times there's a backlog. There's no telling how well each contestant will do, so that makes scheduling them unpredictable.
Based on nothing concrete, I'd say TPTB holds a percentage of contestant slots open to provide auditioners at tapings a reasonable shot of getting on the show. I can't hazard a guess as to how many this is.

With the new requirement that HSers submit photos and signed releases of their three potential PAFs, you won't be seeing anyone getting a call to come in the next day like they have done in the past.

That's a very good point! But I also don't know how they're going to allow for carryover PAFs because I can't see them requiring you to use the same ones, and then there also wouldn't be time to get the releases and photos before the next tape date (which may or may not be the next day).

I think frogman said he was told he could bring some photos and signed releases with him to the studio for any substitute PAFs he might need.

I think you're right, Marley. I had forgotten about that.

That is correct. I may be one of them.

You going to offer the photo of you in the Hot Seat, Bob? I'm really curious about the boundaries on what photos they'll accept.

No, they can use that if they want, but I sent a standard headshot.

Here are the photo requirements:
Tips for a great (and acceptable photo) Phone-A-Friend photo:
• Your Phone-A-Friend must either be pictured alone or in a photo that we can cut down to show just the individual.
• We must be able to clearly see your Phone-A-Friend.
• No logos please (this includes logos on clothing or in background)
I wonder if the no-logo rule would apply to WWTBAM logos as well?

So do I, since that's exactly the photo I would choose to provide.

Would you also have your WWTBAM pencils and refrigerator magnets prominently displayed?

No, I'd have to pose for a new picture to include those. Then I'd have to include my Play It! cap and polo shirt and the full collection of pins, and that's just too much bling for me.
The photo I'm favoring is one of me holding up my "I CAME TO WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE'S
WALK IN AND WIN AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS T-SHIRT"
My expression perfectly matches the sentiment on the shirt.
