Home sick and the cable just went out!

My one joy when I'm home sick is watching way too much tv, especially all the fun court shows. I was in the middle of Judge Judy, when I heard a "boom" outside somewhere relatively close by (which wouldn't normally phase me since I live in a busy area)...then darkness on the tv. Now I'm just being shown the "this channel should be available momentarily" message.
I know it's a stupid show, I know I shouldn't care what the outcome is, and that this should be a sign that I should go read a book. But I want my cable back!!

What's the point of being home sick if you can't watch trash tv??
here's hoping it gets restored soon!

Bite your tongue! Judge Judy is not trash tv!
Now that that's settled...
So, anybody want a rundown of my impressions of the premiere ep of I Love Money? Ha!

Judge Judy's not stupid, she's bitchin'! If JJ ran things, the world would be a much better place. I'd even actually vote if she ran for president (but only if Byrd was on the ticket).
They are all repeats right now so, if you give me the pertinents, I can probably tell you her ruling. If you're that interested.

What I was able to gather, before the cable went out, is that a guy was suing his daughter for repayment of a mattress and maybe a lease he cosigned for her apartment? He was remarried, I think he lived in FL, but I'm not sure. I don't know the deal of the relationship between father and daughter but it sounds like she was in college and either borrowed the money from him or thought it was a gift, but she never got the mattress so she didn't think she had to pay for it. The cable went out then so I don't know the whole story. Cryptic enough for you???

She had a headband that shouldn't be worn by anyone old enough to graduate kindergarten, had a major mystic tan and was wearing a yellow silky outfit that made her resemble a generously sized pat of butter?
No, don't remember it. Ha!
It's been a while, but they were both pieces of work. She won a bed on TPIR which her Dad paid the taxes on, I think. He dumped her mom with three kids, mom remarried and died (of cancer?). Her stepdad kicked her out, Dad took little brother but not her, so she went to live with Grandad. Grandad has recently passed on and her uncle kicked her out of Grandad's place.
This is when she starts crying and Dad attempts to squeeze out a tear when talking about his taking his other children when Mom died, but can only muster doing a little wipe on his bone dry cheek. Which Our Judy is having none of today, thank you.
Yes, I can remember all that, but not the outcome. Ha! Seems like she had to pay him for the apartment lease, but not the $700 for the LSAT she never took because she used it for books. Whoever kept the bed was responsible for the taxes. Dad also got a little chastisement for being a Bad Dad.

Geez now I'm really mad I missed it!! Sounds like a train wreck all around! But yeah, that was definitely the girl, good description and GREAT memory, if you remembered that from before and didn't see it today!!! Thanks for feeding my JJ addiction!

Although I live to make you laugh, the description is more apt than humourous. Just ask sunflower!

Not such a great memory, I think they showed her last week on the upcoming teasers. Although I remembered her vividly.
Had I known you were going to need the disposition of this I would have watched today, but I decided to go out and get a new cell phone provider. So I missed my daily dose of Byrd but I have a schnazzy new cell phone with a brand new number so T-Mobile and all the text message spammers can just go pound sand.

I think I saw the original show as I remember TPIR reference and wondering at the time how she got picked as a contestant!
I think you're right on the outcome, but it has been a while since I saw it.
I haven't heard the term "Mystic Tan" in a while, and it just struck me funny along with the butter stuff.

I don't think I made it to the part of the show where they mentioned TPIR (or I just didn't hear it), but I definitely can't see her on that show!!! Although they do like their college kids, maybe she was the best looking one out of her bunch of friends. Hopefully she wasn't as orange on that show as she was on JJ.

I wonder if the mattress is all she won.

Well, I was going to say that at least this thread helped you to pass the 250 post threshold and get you Bored immortality in the rankings, but in one of life's great ironies, when I went to hit reply my internet connection went out!
Judge Judy is one of the few trash TV shows I not only can tolerate, but actually enjoy (Someone from my hoosier town even wound up on there one time). I used to watch it all the time until "Around the Horn" wound up in its same time slot....

Yeah! 250!
At least I got my People's Court fix, that was on before the cable went out. Not as enjoyable as Judge Judy because she's not as mean. I love when Judge Judy yells at people. I was at a party once with someone who had been on a court show (not JJ or PC) and said the producers told them to interrupt the judge and antagonize, to make for better tv. Both sides get payment, regardless of who "wins" so there is really no incentive to be polite or respectful, as you would be in a normal courtroom, other than if you care how you come across on national tv.
What is Around the Horn?

Around the horn is a sports show. I haven't quite figured it out cause it's like a video game. The host gives points if he likes what the others are saying.
Most are sports writers or affiliated with sports in some way - I think! I'm probably not the best person to be explaining this.....
I was watching Judge Joe Brown a few years ago. Someone from this area was on....not Auburn, but certainly within 15 miles....anyway the girl that asks them questions when it's over wanted to know if she would still be friends with the other person. Her reply? "I wouldn't spit on her if she was on fire!"
Now take the word fire and pronounce it like "far"....and you'll get the picture. I was mortified to say the least.

She actually won a bed that was like five thousand dollars. Maybe Dad bought a mattress for it, but I thought he paid the taxes. You'd think for 5 large they'd toss in a mattress.

What is Around the Horn?
From what I understand, there is a prize fund and the award, if any, is taken out and then they split the rest. I'm thinking the fund is the jurisdictional limit of whatever court they originally had their case filed. Even if the entire fund is awarded in judgment, the losing party still gets a free trip to California, with digs and eats and whatnot.
Call me naive, but I refuse to believe that Judge Judy buys into all those Springer type machinations. I think she has too much respect for herself and her judgments.
I'd still watch anyway, because Byrd makes my little heart go pitter patter.

Judge Judy is the second-highest-paid woman in show business.

Is that true? By show business do you mean just tv or movies too, I can't imagine she makes more than some movie stars or singers? Who is # 1? Oprah?

She pulls in the bank, but she's totally worth it. Not long ago, I saw an article somewhere about her new spread and it mentioned how much her most recent contract is, but I can't remember specifically. Crazy fancy house, though.

Yes, Oprah is #1.
Judy was making $32,000,000 a year
before she renewed her contract this year.

If you have some time, check this out from Chicago Public Radio. I listen to this series via podcast, but you can listen to it via other methods as well.
It is the April 11, 2008 episode titled "Leaving the Fold"

I remember that question from last year's Duel.
I still find that hard to believe. Oprah has all sorts of ancillary deals and is the unquestioned ratings champ for her show.
I don't see how one of many "tell it to the judge" shows on TV can generate such high ratings as to get her that much money (even if she owns the whole show). If that's true, Judge Wapner should have been another Donald Trump.
