The Bride and a friend are taking a cruise next week with 4, count em 4, 16 year olds, only one of which is related by blood to The Bride and Friend.

The cruise leaves from Orlando, and goes to Haiti, Jamaca, Cozumel and someplace I can't recall.

What kind of letter, release or consent from the kids' parents do they need to carry? I know Mexico requires a notarized letter from both parents, but I haven't seen a form.

I seem to have solved the problem with the help of a friend of mine who works at a federal courthouse.

It is the courthouse next to the state courthouse where the Christie Brinkley/Peter Cook divorce trial is playing out.

My friend says looking out her window is like looking into a tent used by Barnum and Bailey.

Nitrah, doesn't the cruise line have all the information required? They or the travel agent who booked this or the ship's representative or someone should have a complete list of docs necessary to do the trip.

My friend sent me a form she's used twice successfully, once when her son traveled with us.

This is how it goes:

We, Mom and Dad, declare that we are the lawful guardians of KID, male, born [DATE] at [BIRTHPLACE], New York carrying an American Passport numbered X which was issued on DATE at PLACE. Our child KID has our permission to travel with his [RELATIONSHIP, NAME AND ADDRESS OF TRAVELING COMPANION], to visit [ALL COUNTRIES TO VISIT]. Our child will be leaving the United States on or about [DEPARTURE DATE] and will be returning to the United States on or about [RETURN DATE].

In the event that our child needs emergency medical treatment and we cannot be reached, [TRAVELING COMPANION] is authorized to consent to medical treatment in our stead. Any questions regarding this document may be addressed to us at:

[EVERY HONKING ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL THEY'VE GOT]

SIGNATURES

NOTARY BLOCKS

And there you are.

Unless, you were asking about the Brinkley/Cook thing.

Who gets custody of Dudley's remains?

I read this, and in my Airplane!-addled mind, I just imagined Nitrah replying:

"Well, Marley, a courthouse is a big building where they hold trials, and a federal courthouse means..."

But that's not important now...

Glad you found a form letter....

There are only a handful of countries that require (or may ask for) such a letter - and generally speaking, you'd be able to leave the US without a problem but may be denied entry to that country should you arrive without said letter. It would probably never be an issue on a cruise, but a very smart idea to carry it just in case - especially since you have a stop in Cozumel. Mexico is one that likes the consent letter.
