Encore Western channel is airing the original Maverick series starting a week from Monday.
They are having a 12-hour marathon July 4.
In August, they will being airing the one and only season of Bret Maverick, the 1980's sequel.
I'll be firing up the DVR.

I am somewhat surprised that Maverick hasn't been released on DVD yet. We are currently watching Rawhide, of the same vintage, and have been pleasantly surprised at how well the show has held up. It's also fun seeing veterans like Clint Eastwood at a very young age and trying to guess who some of the older actors on the show are (or more precisely, were).
Maverick, from the handful of episodes I've seen in recent years, was better written with much more of a sense of humor and should do quite well.

Just read somewhere that "Ally McBeal" and "The Wonder Years" haven't been released on DVD in USA because of the high cost of getting music clearances!! Snikeys...I am somewhat surprised that Maverick hasn't been released on DVD yet.

Music rights are a big issue for some shows. The first season of WKRP was released on DVD but much of the music had to be re-recorded which quite frankly destroyed a lot of the humor on the show and made some of the episodes difficult to follow. I doubt the rest of the show will ever be released for that reason.ne1410s wrote:Just read somewhere that "Ally McBeal" and "The Wonder Years" haven't been released on DVD in USA because of the high cost of getting music clearances!! More recently, the second season of the Fugitive has been largely re-recorded (lots of vintage soundclips of tunes being played on the radio), and almost everything except the main theme has been replaced. I haven't gotten this yet, but the reviews I've read say it's very disconcerting because the soundtrack no longer has the feel of a 60's TV program.
Similarly, anyone who remembers seeing the Tom Hanks TV comedy Bosom Buddies remembers the theme song My Life sung by Billy Joel, which was a perfect accompaniment for the show. Due to rights issues, it's gone (as are a number of other songs featured prominently on various episodes of the show).
Something like Maverick shouldn't be a problem since the theme and most of the music were written exclusively for the show and whoever produced the show would own the rights. Music rights also aren't a problem for current shows since standard music releases include all video rights as well.
